I am throughly impressed by the Maserati GranSport. The flexibilty and torque of the 4.2 litre 8 cylinder is great!

11.3 – Ferrari 360 Modena
11.4 – Lamborghini Gallardo SE
11.4 – Porsche 996 GT3RS
11.6 – Porsche 997 GT3
11.6 – Maserati GranSport

Just_me i checked and there's no 80-180 km/h time in 6th gear for the 335i.

The M5 and M6 seem to do good, even if they're torque "wimps".

I was about to say that. Especially when you consider that the car's chassis is very, very old (only the engine is new from Ferrari). About the flappy paddle gearbox though, is Cambiocorsa related to Ferrari's gearbox in any way? There have been nothing but complaints about the Cambriocorsa, even in Gransport guise (the latest version). There doesn't seem to be any complaints about the F430's or any Ferrari's for that matter.

Ferrari says that the Maserati F1 gearbox is in no way related to their system I think the orignal software is most likley the same unit, but i think the Ferrari has cleaner, faster shifts as well as better electronics. However i do know for fact the MC12 shares the exact same sequential unit as the Enzo.

Re: Sport Auto - 80-180 km/h: 4/5/6

These comparisons are informative, but can be very deceiving. The example of the 335i taking about the same time as a E55 from 80-180km/h in 4th gear is a very good example.

The 335i has a 6 speed transmission, while the E55 has a 5 speed transmission. In 4th gear, the grear ratio in the 335i is 1.19, while it is 1.00 in the E55. In 5th gear, the ratio is 1.00 in the 335i, while the E55 is in overdrive at 0.83.

This just shows the importance of gearing in acceleration runs. In real life, cars and drivers will downshift to get maximum acceleration. And trust me when I say this: The E55 will blow the 335i in any acceleration run in a straight line in real life when you allow for optimal gear selection.

If you compare the gears with identical ratios, the results can be different. For example, let's compare the 335i to the C55 (of course ). If you look at the numbers for 4th gear and 5th gear acceleration, you can see the 335i blows the C55 away!! But does it really? The 335i has the benefit of one extra gear. If you compare the 4th gear of the C55 to the 5th gear of the 335i (when both cars are in a gear ratio of 1.00), you get a completely different picture. One way to get around this is to compare every car using the highest overdrive gear (whether it's 5,6, or 7 speeds).

If you look at it this way, some of the "surprises" we see on this list are no longer very surprising. If all cars had the same number of gears, this comparison would be more straightforward than it is now.

Re: Sport Auto - 80-180 km/h: 4/5/6

Well in real life at such speeds the M5 will leave the e55/e63 behind. After 160 Km/h the Mercs. can't touch it.

As for the 335i, well aren't we forgeting the runflats ?!

Trust me, i'm aware of that Another factor can be the fact that for some vehicles top gear is 5th, some 6th. (EDIT, you already said that, my bad) As you said, it's all about gear ratios.

If you check each set of posts you'll notice an "*" which represents top gear.

Hey Imhotep, I'm not talking about the M5 blowing away the E55/E63 after 160km/h. I'm talking about comparing acceleration runs in 4th/5th/6th gear when different cars have different number of gears, which could dramatically affect the results, and I'm using the C55 gear ratios as an example simply because I know my car's specs very well.

I'm not bashing BMW or the 335i. Why do you constantly sound so defensive??

What is YOUR point about the 335i on runflats??

Yeah, but the 335i doesn't compete in real life with the E55. The E55 was a M5 competitor and here it was quite behind the M5 (14.7 vs 10.8). Ofcourse the Ms have that freaking fast 7 speed SMG III gerbox, so it might not be fair.

It would have been faster with some proper tyres.
You're talking about gear ratios influencing the result, while I'm talking about tyres as a factor too.
The giveth and the taketh.
