There are quite a few viable sources that are all going to come up, however some are likely to be here sooner than others. Hydrogen or Fuel Cells probably wont arrive until the next decade or two if ever.

What opens and closes the valves in a camless engine - i.e. what kind of precision system is helping save fuel?

Im sorry that wasnt very detailed. The idea is wrapping the stem of the valve with a solanoid then sending a current (+ or -) through it which would shift the the valve up and down.

I think that not having the extra moving parts and weight of the camshaft(s) and associated chains/belts improves efficiency. The solenoids can be driven through either the battery or through a (probably) upgraded alternator.

I have heard that hybrids have got a looming problem, the disposal of the highly environmentally-detrimental batteries.
