Does sunroof add weight?

Two cars with one having a sunroof and the other one without it. Which of these cars is heavier?

Ps. What's a moonroof? Same thing as sunroof?

Re: Does sunroof add weight?

An integrated electrical glass sunroof will add between 10 and 20 kgs to a car. It will reduce the headroom, too, and also the structural rigidity (especially when opened). Trouble is that this additional weight is located at the top of the car, thus at the worst place, because it will make the center of gravity of the car higher.

Quite right! You've adressed all major points.

Re: Does sunroof add weight?

Mmmmh, I've just seen...My post is a little bit negative maybe.
These differences will be hardly noticeable. It won't turn a Porsche into a heavy boat as rigid as an American pick-up!

It adds light to the interior, and is refreshing in summer, without beeing as noisy as an opened window (if well thought). It is quite interesting, even if a bit expensive for my taste generally. If you like the feeling of a sunroof, you have no real reason not to pick one, unless you are a fan of track time-attack!

However, an aftermarket sunroof is often not perfectly hermetic, and leads to water infiltration in the car, rust on the borders of the sunroof...

BTW, the difference between sunroof and moonroof....
The sunroof was usually a metal panel that you could open, whereas the moonroof was made of glass.
Now all sunroof are made of glass too, so there is no difference any more.

Re: Does sunroof add weight?

yep heavier..hence no option of pano roof on C63 only ordinary sunroof..
maybe even has something to do with how rigid the car is..
not sure though

Re: Does sunroof add weight?

Sunroof or not the driver won't notice a difference.

Re: Does sunroof add weight?

^^ Of course he will! There is more much light and sun in an interior with a sunroof!!

No seriously I agree, like I said the difference will not be noticeable unless you do time-attack on a track!!

Re: Does sunroof add weight?

I like watching the rain (rare these days due to drought) fall on the sunroof at night time when I'm stuck in traffic... The labe departure system I ordered has earnt it's money many times over now
