Water as potential Fuel Source for Cars???

ERIE, Pa. - An Erie cancer researcher has found a way to burn salt water, a novel invention that is being touted by one chemist as the "most remarkable" water science discovery in a century.
John Kanzius happened upon the discovery accidentally when he tried to desalinate seawater with a radio-frequency generator he developed to treat cancer. He discovered that as long as the salt water was exposed to the radio frequencies, it would burn.
The discovery has scientists excited by the prospect of using salt water, the most abundant resource on earth, as a fuel.
Rustum Roy, a Penn State University chemist, has held demonstrations at his State College lab to confirm his own observations.
The radio frequencies act to weaken the bonds between the elements that make up salt water, releasing the hydrogen, Roy said. Once ignited, the hydrogen will burn as long as it is exposed to the frequencies, he said.
The discovery is "the most remarkable in water science in 100 years," Roy said.
"This is the most abundant element in the world. It is everywhere," Roy said. "Seeing it burn gives me the chills."
Roy will meet this week with officials from the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense to try to obtain research funding.
The scientists want to find out whether the energy output from the burning hydrogen — which reached a heat of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit — would be enough to power a car or other heavy machinery.
"We will get our ideas together and check this out and see where it leads," Roy said. "The potential is huge."

that will never happen, if that is serious project that guy would be dead already, oil lobby wouldn't allow it, not in a million years

THis is talking about a water fuel cell which involves the combustion of water into hydrogen ions and oxygen molecules...

2H2O → 2H2 + O2 (the energy coming in the form of the H+ ions)

The reaction is designed so that is reversible and technically will last forever although eventually you will need to replace the water levels...

2H2 + O2 → 2H2O

So it creates a continous cycle to using water to create energy to propel the car then using the waste products to be turned into the source of the energy, a renewable fuel that is totally clean...

If we know what's good for us, we'll wish against this. Water could become the most expensive liquid when these 'oil dons' get their hands on it. Every month without rainfalll is going to be spun into an impending crisis. LOL

Not sure about the green part... if I remember well, sodium chloride could breakdown to make chlorine (Cl-) and something else. Last I checked chlorine vapours aren't good for the environment, not for humans.

But I could be wrong... it's been a while since i touched organic chemistry.

That would only be a problem if salt water was used... pure water - H20 has no traces of chlorine...... this fuel cell is similar to the BMW hydrogen engine except it works in the reverse... water is broken down to produce hydrogen and oxygen wereas in the BMW engine hydrogen and oxygen and reacted to form H20...
