Re: DaSilva's First Car

I would definitely go for the Smart Coupé! I don't really like the design of the Roadster.

Re: DaSilva's First Car

I've driven all Smart models and the best ones were the ForFour's: safe handling, decent build quality feel and actually fun to drive, especially in 1.3 and 1.5 CDI mode (the base 1.1 is slow and sluggish).

The Smart ForTwo is a good city car, but that's it. Out in the countryside the handling is terrible it just feels unsafe. It's quite spacious on the inside, but the trunk is non-existant.

The Smart Roadster was very dissapointing. I drove the Turbo version and it was quick, but the handling was destroyed by a non-responsive steering wheel feel and the automatic transmission was jerky. The steering feel tended to seize rock-solid at times and you couldn't control the car. I don't know if this is normal for this car, but I found it annoying and dangerous. Second, everytime the transmission shifted, the whole car would shake. The shifts were also slow to shift and respond and when they did, they were jerky as mentioned before. Overall a terrible car.

The best Smart, if you really want to take this route, is the ForFour. They're not being made anymore but I suppose there should be some good ones on the used carmarket. Avoid the 1.1. They're slow and underpowered. The 1.3 is ok, but the best deal is the 1.5 CDI diesel. It's very quick because of the torque reserves and the engine works well with the 5-speed manual transmission - which is actually quite smooth and refined for a DCX manual transmission product.

You might also want to look at some used Japanese or German cars. From the Mercedes-Benz side, I'd recommend a 190E Series (the 190D models are just really really slow and with all this talk about emissions, forget it!) or a used W124 E-Class, maybe a 200E.

The car looks great. Perfect colour combination and great equipped. The dealer is located in Dresden? It's a city in former east germany.

Re: DaSilva's First Car

Hi!

I had a Smart Roadster-Coupe 82cv
I LOVED it!!! :usa 7uh:

2 things:

1) beware: no power-steering!!!! Don't take this option! The normal is 10 times better, pure and not too heavy, and with so much better feeling...

2) You MUST take the steering-pads, it is absolutely necessary. Otherwise the gearbox in not fun, and the automatic mode could be better... It is a bit slow, but the pleasure to change the gears with the paddles...

Really it is a fabulous car, the noise is really impressive (almost flat-six-like), it glues to the road (understeering at the limit, but very neutral).

You almost feel like in a Porsche... But very much lower!!

I had a lot of pleasure with that car, and 5L/100kms, little insurance, tyres very enduring...

The build qualty is absolutely horrible, that's clear, but you don't want a Mercedes!

The electrical roof is quite practical, and gives you a real refreshing in summer, it is a real convertible without giant windshield...

And my brother has a Z3 (2.3) and, I prefered the smart, much more fun, and you really can put full throttle with full sensation without explosing your driver's licence!! And the Z3 is not really safe I found, quite instable...

On the snow, with ESP no problem. Without, very fun. I did it (without), no soucy, really progressive, it is not a Porsche!!!

Really, a fabulous little car, econmically affordable and will give you a lot of pleasure.

PS carwimmer: I hate the Forfour. Very noisy, but noise of a little motor so no pleasure, bad build quality, a very common car...

No smart spirit into it.

The Fortwo, well, I liked it. On the road it has Giant-understeering, it does not brake, the traverse wind make you change of lanes, the motor of the cdi was really short (but full of volunty), it can't go on highways....
But, frankly, it is full of charm, there is a spirit into it that make it attaching.

The roadster is really cool, buy it yoiu won't regreat it! The only reason why I sold it is that I needed more space because I'm doing an internship in Germany...
