| Re: The 7G transmission I don;t think its a must. I believe most people would rather drive 6 speed manual rather than a 7 speed SMG or auto. Personally I like shifting and using the clutch. I'd rather do it. Its apart of driving pleasure. BMW should no that when they use computers for everything they can take away from that pure driving experience (which includes shifting). I cant wait for the M5 6 speed! |

| Re: The 7G transmission Yeah i heard that to that it has 2 reverse gears.. one point of having 2 reverse gears.. is that when you put it in winter mode.. it can select the 2nd rear gear.. wich should be heavier.. that could help you get the car movin off the spot if its slippery.. |

| Re: The 7G transmission IMO the 7G is not a must for all cars, there might be some types of cars that require such trans, but am sure most of the cars can do with other kinds of trans. But I think MB is using this trans. for two reasons: 1. The cars that don't need this trans power wise are offered with this trans just for the smoothness and the fuel efficiency. 2. The cars with high outputs MB produce need such trans. Or maybe its just to say hey we have a 7 gear trans ![]() And yes I`ve heard of the 2 reverse gears. Quote:
Thanks Artist, didnt know that. | |

| Re: The 7G transmission I'm reasonably familiar with the 7Gtronic having experienced it in various Mercedes cars. IMO, the transmission is the best automatic tranny in the world. You can't feel it 99% of the time and I've never experienced it to be in the wrong gear, even if I am applying a sporty driving style. It's also very quiet in the way it works. If 7 gears help reduce fuel economy while increasing performance, then I am all for it. That being said, I wish Mercedes would offer the 7Gtronic on the A-Class too! Although I'd get a manual for the A-Class, I'd like a 7Gtronic A-Class for city driving if I lived there. ![]() |

| Re: The 7G transmission There was a time when people thought 5 gears was too much, when 6 gears came it was the same talk as before. Who knows, 8 gears might be the future. Anyway, I cant vote. 7 gears are great for performance cars, I dont think it suits a Renault Clio ![]() Last edited by Just_me; 11-16-2005 at 07:19 AM.. |

| Re: The 7G transmission Traditionally, Mercedes has always been "ahead of the game" regarding automatics. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s when most makes were offering 3-speed automatics, Mercedes offered a 3-speed automatic as well as 4-speed automatic. Then when others were offering 4-speeds, MB offered their famous 5-speed A/T. Now that the competition offers 6-speed A/T's, MB dropped the ball with their 7Gtronic. Can't wait what the future holds in store. "Yeah, this is my new C220 CDI with the 11Gtronic..." ![]() |
