| The new SLR 722 GTR Gullwing Revival: The Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 Edition GTR Posted October 1, 2007 At 10:00 AM CST - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER When Mercedes unveiled the - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER, most questioned whether or not the limited-edition model possessed enough new attributes to justify its added cost over the traditional SLR model. Apparently AMG engineers too felt the SLR 722 Edition was capable of more, so they created what can only be described as jaw-dropingly bad-ass version of the model - titling it the Mercedes SLR 722 GTR - and giving those of you waiting for a modern-day Gullwing revival a EUR 775,000 orgasm-inducing supercar. Spotted at a Mercedes dealership in Germany, the SLR 722 GTR's feature list is extensive. A widened, re-worked and carbon fiber-laden body; a full roll cage; a new front grille; new venting throughout; an enormous rear diffuser and equally enormous rear wing; OZ racing wheels - these are just some of what to expect from the special-edition model. Oh, and the best part? Despite the modifications, weight has been reduced yet again, with the model dropping 300 kg to weigh in at 2,866 lbs. As stated, it runs about a million U.S., but with a reported production of only 21 units, the SLR 722 GTR has without question just become the hottest current production Mercedes on the planet. When the company released the 722 Edition last year, little did we know it was actually a homologation model for a potential FIA GT sports car. In releasing the GTR, Mercedes have become romantic about their Mille Miglia-winning 300SLR which Stiring Moss piloted to victory in 1955. This was followed by a Uhlenhaut Coupe that never made it into production. The 2008 GTR now pays tribute to this little-forgotten legacy and opens a new chapter in Mercedes motor sports. Even before its release date, the very first 722 GTR was spotted at a Mercedes dealership in Germany. Accompanied by a brief specification sheet, it was obvious the work was carried out AMG/McLaren themselves and their comprehensive program now modifies almost every aspect of the car. Immediately noticeable is the new body which is much wider to handle 19 OZ racing wheels. The front grill vents are gone and much larger, freer flowing air extractors sit on the hood and flank the side of the car. The rear now has a massive wing and an equally sizable diffuser. Under the body, the car has shed 300kg and reduced its dry weight to 2866 lbs (1300 kg). The engine remains in relatively stock specification and still produces 650 bhp. Inside, the car is appropriately stripped out with only the essential functions being controlled from a carbon fiber binnacle. New carbon fiber door panels and full roll cage complete the transformation. Only 21 examples of the GTR are planned to be made and each costs upward of 750 000 Euros. We hope that a race team will pick up the model to race in FIA GT1, but that will depend on ambitious motivation to race a front engine car against the much more suitable Maserati MC12. 722 GTR #1 was spotted at a Mercedes-Benz dealer in Germany by forum user HDennis. Many thanks to Basman007 and HDennis for making this happen. Story by Supercars.net Enjoy... |

| Re: The new SLR 722 GTR Did you notice the front wheel archs, looks like the Gullwing with that strip... I think it will be track only, seems to sit very low with few suspension, tyres looks slick... I hope the rear diffusor is really really efficient, because it looks awful with it. Looks like a radio-control model with that...The rear wing is a bit too big also, a big bit even I would say, but il gives it a racing-look. Too bad it replaces the funny airbrake... Funny, you can see the motor through the side vents, real air intake and heat diffusor this... Wonder how it is on track... 300kg less is really a good job, 1.300kg is good, but not really for such a track oriented car I think, don't know what an FXX, Zonda R or MC12 weights? I know the aero of the SLR is really hard, because the design makes it horrible, so lots of work to make it stable but fast... The price tag is quite impressive ... Looks like a monster, only bad thing is that ugly rear diffusor. |
