Speeding awards celebrity status to your license plate

Apparently, when some motorists see their speed displayed on a radar-assisted light sign, they don't pay much attention (hell, we've seen people speed up to see how high it goes).

The solution, it seems, may be in the form of Atkins' new speed sign that not only shows the speed of the vehicle and tells the driver to slow down, but also the displays the vehicle's license plate number.

The new technology is currently undergoing testing in the U.K. and, during a test run on the M42, elicited the desired response: brake lights.

It only works because it's something people haven't seen before.

When I know there is one of these ahead I always try and speed up to get high speed of the day. About a month ago in our ML500 with my wife, my radar detector was going off and in the distance I could see the sign. I punched it and went through at 98 mph- slightly disappointed I didn't break triple digits, but maybe next time.

LOL, that's pretty funny.

What they need is to periodically combine them with real radar speed guns that issue tickets, just to keep people on their toes. However, I guess that people who want to speed will do so, and for everyone else, these signs will just show people that they've certainly been noticed.

They are supposed to deter speeding, but for some of us they have the opposite effect! I wonder if the police realize that.
