Camless Engines

I've been doing a lot of reading about this technology. It looks to have the potential to further engine performance by a fairly substantial amount. Anyways, I thought everyone would enjoy the read.

Re: Camless Engines

Have you heard of Solanoid Valve Timing. I think the idea has been around for a while but hasnt actually formed.

Its basically a solaniod around a valve that sends a positiev or negative signal up or down the stem of the valve. This way you no longer need cam shaft. The valve will have a magnet attached to it and the solanoid will send a pulse that can move the valve to become opened or closed. The solanoid would be powered by the battery from relays. You would aso have it hooked up to the CPU of the car so depending on what the driver requests the computer could automatically electrically change the timing of the four valves on each cylinder because they go up and down electrically anyway. The computer would have to be very powerful (like the one on the innovative M5).

Yes, I've read a little bit on the concept. But unlike SVT, camless engines are supposed to be just around the corner. A company called Valeo is currently testing them and hopes to bring them to the market by 2008. Read the last article for more info.

Re: Camless Engines

Actually that concept seems to be the closest thing ive seen to solanoid valve timing. Each valve is powered indidually by 12 volts. With solanoid valve timing you dont need springs, wihch means less energy in moving it up and down.

2008 is soon. Camless engines will change the industry. We will see which car company makes the change first...
