Brand loyalty...

I see a lot of the dedication and love you guys have for your favorite car makers, just interested to learn where that spawned from?

For me, my father had an W126 when I first came into the world and a little after that. From that point on I grew up and cultivated my brain into thinking that MB is the best brand in the world, and that idea floated around in my head until I was about 12, then I started getting into BMW. I went off and on for sometime, teetering between the two brands and gave into BMW and that lasted up until very recently. Always in my heart MB has been, something I just can't let go of, there have been many occasions when I've found myself attracted to certain cars, then I'll see an MB at some point and my conscience will say "there's nothing like a Mercedes Benz" - and that sentiment has been reiterated by many I know and have come across, so may be it's true? But even more so, there's just a feeling I get from the cars that I've never gotten from any other car. Some of you might read this and say "wow, you're wayyyyyyyyy too into it" - well, it should also be said that all of this is coming from someone who's first word was "car"

As a whole and in all honesty, all German cars are my favorite cars, but MB has always come first.

Re: Brand loyalty...

I've been into cars since I was very young as well. I started off as a Benz fan (believe it or not) because my father had an E-class (2 generations ago, didn't know the codename). However, I got into BMW because of the E36, but what brought me over totally was the E39. It was just simply perfect. Ever since, BMW has been my favorite car brand and that is why I am getting a degree for mechanical engineering so that I can permanently work for them.

However, as much as I love BMWs, I still like Benz and Audis as well... Germans are the best

Re: Brand loyalty...

Interesting question/thread.

For me it was the W124 E-Class that started it all for me with Mercedes-Benz. Up until that time I was a big fan of American cars, of which my favorite I'm embarrased to the point of not wanting to admit which brand it was . Suffice to say the rest is history. It was the details about the W124 that drew me to Mercedes. The single blade wiper, the springs in the seats, the different size rearview mirrors (the drivers side mirror was long and straight and the passenger side mirror was short and stubby), the heft and click/snick of the controls, the "thunk" of the door slam, and that slogan "Engineered like no other car in the world". The diesel W124 models even had vents in the passenger side fender for extra breathing. Ah..Mercedes used to be soley about the engineering and the details were just as wierd as they were functional. Their cars of today are gorgeous and much better performing but they aren't always the engineering studies the older cars were. When you drove a W124 or W140 or R129 you knew the engineers were in charge.

Then a few years after I discovered the W124 E, the R129 SL came along and I knew I had found my love-brand.

To this day there are still quite a few W124 E's in my old neighborhood where I grew up, along with some W126 models too. Most of them in excellent shape too. The W124 and W126 were the first Mercedes' I ever drove or rode in, followed by the 190E because as you see I'm an 80's child.

That said, like the others that have posted so far....I love German cars in general. I had similar first time experiences with BMWs and Audis too, but Mercedes was first and still is with me. Hell I just like European cars period I guess because a childhood friend of mines mother had a Volvo diesel (a 740 I think) and I loved that car. It was so solid and felt like it could drive through anything, just like a Mercedes.

M

Re: Brand loyalty...

While i was 9 years old, my father's 1st car was BMW 320i. My father had a great job in that time and had a lot of money of course and driving a beemer in that time was a lux, if you know what i mean. While many other people were driving Skodas and Fiats, my father had a BMW. That's when i started to like that brand and it has continued even untill today. I love all german cars, but BMW has a special place in my heart.

Re: Brand loyalty...

My dad had a whole range of different vehicles to drive. But for some reason, whenever we went anywhere I would always insist on going in one of the Benz's. So even as a Kid, I could tell there was something special about a Benz. What a BRAT I was. lol

Anyway, I've loved the brand as long as I can remember. And even though my affection has waned a bit in more recent times, which has had the positive outcome of opening me up to other brands such as BMW, Audi and more recently Lexus, I still have the deepest respect and admiration for Mercedes. I trust completely that they will restore the brand to its rightful position.

Re: Brand loyalty...

My mom and pop owned nothing buy Volvos! I must have grown up with 5 of them. So naturally I thought thay were the ultimate car. I never really paid attention to the German makes until the 1992 W140 S-Class came around!
I really thought this was the ultimate of ultimates! so majestic and powerful!
Thats when I became a fan of MB over all other makes!!
