Autocar has achieved many records over the years, of which you can expect to see more in these archive records, but the lap record of the infamous Nürburgring is one of the most significant.

In 1997 the fastest lap time recorded by a production car went to the Nissan Skyline GTR. But the Skyline which set that time of 7min and 59sec was free of the speed limiter standard on UK versions, so it was discounted and the record was left open.

We sent four of the fastest production cars on sale in 1997, two-times Le Mans winner, Robert Nearn, and our own Steve Sutcliffe.

autocar got a 7:43 with a Murcielago

I wonder what they would be able to pull of with an LP640.
