Speaking of which, Martin. I tried an experiment last month to see how much MPG I could eke out of my Accord V6.

I had a late-night drive up the 405 freeway to do, and 45 miles between me and my destination. My goal was to stay at a steady 60mph, and to never accelerate or brake unless necessary.

I have a trip computer which tabulates all kinds of neat information, including cumulative MPG over a set time. When I got home I was astonished...

I got a whopping average 37 MPG for the drive.

That's a very good result Osna... very impressive for a petrol V6.

The key to economy driving is exactly as you've described above. Also, notice how wafting along at a sedate 60 mph can achieve excellent economy, but as soon as you up the ante to 75 mph, aerodynamic and mechanical efficiencies drop drastically and shoots fuel economy up.

Now with a sleek and slippery FWD saloon like an Accord the results don't quite break the bank yet, but, imagine the effects of a slightly heavier foot in a turbocharged all-wheel drive SUV with a drag co-efficient of 0.37...

The concept of fuel "economy" goes write out the window and it becomes more of an exercise of petrol account damage limitation!

Re: Who is the best driver?

Now that you mentioned it guys, i managed to get a nice 7.2 l/100km for a 210km journey between Patra and Athens. I just stayed at 110km/h and did no more acceleration or sudden brakings. Also no overtaking.

So it's possible, and quite easy actually to drive economically.

On the other hand, i have done the same route using 65 litres of gasoline while at normal speeds i need no more than 30l...
