I don't think that design is on of VW's strenth points. The golf does have some character, but that just because VW is very afraid of playing with its design. the only "revolution" that happened till now with the switch from Golf II to Golf III. Other than that VW desn't seem to have any key design elements which they're keeping fresh over the years, like e.g BMW' Hoffmeinster Kink. They don't even have a typical front grill. The chrome mask they have right now is just a struggled attempt to create a new character, but I don't see it working, and judging by the new Phaeton, the Scirocco Concept and some of the impressions in car mags, it looks like it's not gonna live for more than one generation. | |

| Re: Design trademarks of BMW, Audi, MB, Porsche, VW etc VW as a group that includes Bugatti, Audi as well as plain-jane VWs have a general design ID of being bulbous and roundish at the edges. As Rob said it is difficult to tell. An isolated similar design cue is the four rounded rear lights of the Veyron, which looks a little like the Phaeton's four LED 'eyes' at night. The Passat's single concentric LEDs on each side for the rear looks akin to the Golf's, another isolated case. VW's design details are quite a mess... But the general DNA is there IMO. |
