Re: Automotive Photo Comp #21

Directed at both Choleric and DaSilva.

I showed a friend the images posted in this thread and he pointed that both of yours image do not comply with the rules of the thread. He noted that both your images have that black border, and according to rule #8 that is not allowed.

Quote:
8. Levels, Curves, Colour Balance, Brightness/Contrast, Hue/Saturation, cropping, or anything else capable in the development process or with filters and common special lenses are allowed to use in Photoshop or other image editing softwares. Other adjustments and effects are not allowed to use in your picture.
The black border is not 'capable in the development process or with filters and common special lenses'. I don't mean to sound like a knit-picker but to me those black borders add to the appeal of the image, especially for Choleric's images which are appealing due to the contrast between the black of the border and the white of the snow.

I'm not sure what others think, but I don't think it's really fair having those borders, and adding a little disclaimer to rule #8 to allow such a feature is not really a honest move simply because it is no longer a naturally capable photo.

I raised this point shortly after the competition started. I think Beckhammia (?) posted an image with a border and logo and at that time it was indicated by someone that it appeared to be okay. I would tend to agree that borders can enhance the effect of an image (and as indicated in the response I got earlier it can also detract from the image.) I would suggest that no borders or special effects of any kind are allowed except the normal graphic adjustments offered by PS and other programs.

We did discuss this before, and yes it is possible in the developmental process, when making the print, all you need to do is block out all the light from the enlarger except the perimiter, among other possibilities.

...Fair enough. Consider it a standard feature now.

But should that be valid for phot's taken by a digital camera?
I say this because when adding that black border you are not simply editing or enhancing the original photo, but rather adding to it.

Re: Automotive Photo Comp #21

So far NevedaJack, Mirage77 and I think that borders should not be allowed and that any adjustments should be kept to simple graphical enhancements.

What do you other guys think about this topic?

Re: Automotive Photo Comp #21

Well untill we get response from more than three people, nothing is going to change, because honestly I feel it enhances the image no more than adjusting the colours does, so perhaps we should just allow pictures staight from the camera, no editing at all.

An example of how much color adjustments effect the photo(Julius I'm going to use your photos hope you dont mind):

now that is just as much of an impact as a border IMO and both can be done in photoshop or the "developmental process"

But if the majority of you don't want them allowed than we can not allow them.
