***HELP! I think there is someting wrong with my camera....***

This is the last shot I took last night using a tripod. Do you guys see the those little lines running vertically across the picture, especially towards the bottom? What the hell are they? I examined the lens for scratches but there are none - and I always take care of my things and especially my camera. I handle her with care and always have the lens cover on when I am not using it.

So this morning when I noticed that the pictures my camera was taking were...weird in terms of color. I don't know how to explain it, but see for yourself.

Certain basic colors are missing. Is there something wrong with my camera? I didn't touch any of the settings and I just spent an hour re-reading the manual looking for what could be wrong. I couldn't find anything.

What the hell could be wrong? I'm going up to the local Media Mart first thing tomorrow. It's gonna suck balls if I have to send this thing in for two weeks! Then I have to use my Olympus FE-200 which already feels so outdated!

Re: ***HELP! I think there is someting wrong with my camera....***

Seems that red is missing. There's only green and blue - and not the complete RGB colour scale.

Ok, our camera is a Nikon D40? If you bought it last month (the MM Nikon / Hama / 90 EUR Cash back - bundle) you've a good chance to leave the mart with a new cam. Usually MM is very customer friendly.

But before, you should try the following steps:

1. Reset your camera (the reset button is above the cam's usb port), format the sd-card
2. Install the current Firmware - if a newer one is available ( - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER - the site is currently down )
3. Have a look at some Nikon-specific boards - e.g.:
Hope that helps. Pls forget about the steps above if your cam is not a Nikon.

Re: ***HELP! I think there is someting wrong with my camera....***

Hi Pekka, thanks for the reply!

I forgot to mention that my camera is also a NIKON D-40 and that I've already RESET the camera thrice and formatted the SD-Card twice. No changes, the pictures are still missing the red color.

Will check out those sites ASAP. I am hoping the local Media Mart can help me out, after all I bought it from them. My only problem is that if I have to send it in I will be so irritated. I love that camera and I can't stand the thought of having to use the "inferior" Olympus FE-200 digital camera!

Hi Christian,

hope that the boards will help you. Asking NevadaJack will help, too. Nevertheless you have to bring to cam to MM.

I know, giving away your new 'daily-use' gadget will be a real pain in the butt. Since i've had no issues with my D40 so far, it should be the only prob with your cam (hopefully) .

Re: ***HELP! I think there is someting wrong with my camera....***

UPDATE!!!

Well I just returned from the local Media Mart without my Nikon D-40. I had it sent in to Nikon to be fixed. They told me this will take about two weeks. Two weeks!? What am I supposed to do without a camera for two weeks!?

I still have my Olympus FE-200, but after shooting around with a DSLR camera for nearly two months, I cannot bring myself to touch such an inferior camera!

Grrrr....

Apparently the problem, according to the two camera guys up there, is something related to the software, specifically the software that controls the red color on the digital pictures.

Two weeks without my DSLR camera...sucks balls.

Thanks Christian for this update!! You can be lucky, that your camera is still new and you have guarantee... Nevertheless, it's sad, that you'll have to dispense with your camera for the next two weeks. I hope, that Nikon can fix the problem.

Thankfully I managed to attend two more classic car shows in my region before my camera messed up. But I won't be able to participate in the Spotted Today section - unless I use my Olympus. God I hate that thing now after using a DSLR camera!!!

A real bummer. Hope it comes back as good as new wimmer. Too bad it takes a couple of weeks.
