| Audi driver Ekstrom wins "Race of Champions". Audi driver Ekstrom wins "Race of Champions" Mattias Ekström caught the driver's title. This was rather surprising as Loeb was the clear favorite, also in my books, not just the French crowd's Ekström: "It's the best moment in my life. Better even than winning my DTM title in 2004. And I'm especially proud to have beaten Loeb in his own car. I knew before that race that it would be tough and I just told myself to go for it. I didn't get off to a very good start but then the adrenalin kicked in and I fought back. Unbelievable." Loeb: "Mattias is quick on a rally stage and also quick on a race circuit. And on top of that he drove very well today. He deserves to be champion. I was especially impressed by his speed in the Xsara WRC. It was close run, but he then left me standing in our race with the Renault Mégane Trophy." Team Finland (Grönholm/Kovalainen) managed to win the Nations Cup against one-man US team of Travis Pastrana (first Johnson got injured, then also Speed, who replaced him). So kudos to him. Kovalainen: "Marcus and I have been trying to win the ROC-Nations Cup since we first formed a team together in Paris in 2004. We were determined to do it this year and now we've succeeded. All credit to Travis though. He drove really well and I had to push as hard as I could to beat him in our two heats together in the final." Grönholm: "It's really Team Heikki – not Team Finland – that has won this, It's the first time I've been awarded a cup after not winning anything! But hey, maybe this means my luck is turning and I will start winning from here…" Pastrana: "Hey, the way I'm feeling, you could come up with a million reasons why I've had such a good run. I don't care. I mean in what world do you beat guys like David Coulthard? I love this world; I want to stay in it," So all and all, looks like the event has remained the warm and friendly off-season race it has always been. Nice to see some things never change. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Yannis; 12-18-2006 at 10:09 AM.. |
