PCA Race Season Kicks Off at Sebring: Pics

The Porsche Club of America 2007 race season started this weekend at Sebring. It was reported to be the largest gathering of Cup cars in one place at one time ever. There were estimated to be 90 Cup cars there. They gathered most of them on the front straight for pictures. I didn't get that picture, but I'm sure it will be in Panorama or Christophorus. I did get pics of the first Cayman S race car I've seen and some 997 Cup cars in classic trim:

Thanks for sharing. Must have been awesome with all those Cup cars. I was just talking about the Cup cars the other day at SpeedWerks.
It truly is a game for the very wealthy. Not only are the cars really expensive but the repairs are something else because of the sealed engine that only Porsche can touch.

Any Cup cars in your future?

Maybe someday. They actually aren't that expensive to buy. Used ones can be bought for $75K (or less), but the engine/transmission needs serviced every 100 hours and the total cost is $50k for that service at PMNA. There was a cup car engine on a pallet for sale with 3 hours on it for $39K at the track.

Re: PCA Race Season Kicks Off at Sebring: Pics

The $50,000 service is quite something. I was just told of some $2,200+ battery change charge on someone's Cup car. Obviously there is a surprising number of people for whom a $50,000 service charge is just another utility bill to pay.
This whole racing game is very addictive though. In fact I have discovered that it is people like that (although obviously not Cup car drivers - but still very wealthy people) who make it possible for outfits like SpeedWerks to exist and do so well. Fascinating how those businesses work. So few people get to do work that they really love to do, and these guys are part of that lucky small crowd.

Of course the thing with the Cup cars is that you can also earn money while the others just do it for the sake of enjoying it.

Looking forward to hearing about the RS when you get it. Any news about the rebuild of your 930?

I'm not pushing on the 930 restoration. When its done its done. I am trying to get some things done to the 914-6, and I need to get some work done on the 996 GT3. The Gallardo is for sale to make room/pay for the RS. I placed my order and chose the options a few weeks ago. Production date is in June, delivery probably in August. My friend got a call from his dealer that his RS was built and would be here in 30 days. He got a white one and plans on using it for a daily driver, replacing his 997 S cab. He also has a M6 as a daily and a F430 spider.

Sounds good, thanks. White will be a good Daily Driver color since it probably attracts less attention than the others. I've followed this 997 GT3RS frenzy with interest on the 997GT2/GT3 forum. Lots of people complaining about the extra few thousand (~$4,000?) for the white option. I think you will be getting the smartest choice (perception of authenticity, resale etc.) of the lot though with your color choice.

BTW. What options did you choose?

Orange
Gear lever trim exterior color (CDJ)
Instrument surround exterior color (CDP)
Storage compartment lid with model logo (CUV)
Bi-Xenon Headlamp package (P74)
Rear center console painted exterior color (XME)
Foot rest aluminum (XXZ)
Carbon door sill model insignia (X69)
Ceramic composite brakes (450)
Floor mats (810)
Chrono package (639)
Interior package carbon (EZA)
Switch panel package painted exterior color (CDG)
Door opener trim exterior color (CET)

I wanted to get the panel that surrounds the radio and climate control in carbon fiber or orange, but in order to do that you have to get navigation, which I think is silly in a GT3. Plus the navigation is $3070 and to have the surround in orange is $2230. I didn't think it was worth $5300 just to get orange around the radio and climate control.
