| NASCAR coming to NYC NYC NASCAR By 2009? Racetrack To Be Built On Staten Island DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) NASCAR could be coming to New York City. International Speedway Corporation has paid $100 million for more than 450 acres of dormant land on Staten Island and has its sights on completing a racetrack there as early as 2009. International Speedway owns or operates eleven of the stock car circuit's major tracks. Speedway plans to buy an additional 236 acres next year. In all, it wants to acquire 660 acres, which it said would be the largest undeveloped block of land within New York City. The company must first do a feasibility study. And New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg previously has voiced doubts about traffic jams that might be generated by the track. |

| Re: NASCAR coming to NYC As for those that dont know NY i will explain a bit, one of the 5 boroughs of NY is Staten Island. About half of Staten Island is a dump, and always was. Staten Island has the Verrazano Bridge and connects Brooklyn,NY. to NJ. Very bad congested area usually, if no traffic you can make it from NJ thru the Staten Island Expwy to Brooklyn in 7 minutes. But if theres traffic you will sit there for an hour. I know this beacause its part of my daily commute. Also after 9/11, all the wreckage and even body parts that couldnt be recovered and sorted out are buried in "The Dump" as its called. With tons of garbage that has accumulated over the years. Though it is a good investment for NY and excellent usage of the mass area of land fill, traffic which is already a nightmare on a daily basis is a MAJOR issue. I feel this needs to be sorted/figured out first. But a co-worker of mine says they already started clearing ground for the project.... just some info so you readers can understand the development. |
