| Blitzen Benz (MB Enthusiast) 1909 Benz 200-PS Rennwagen “Blitzen Benz”: In 1909, this was the fastest machine in earth – quicker than any aircraft or train. It was the first European car to break the magic 125 mph (200 km/h) speed barrier. A massive 21,504cc 4-cylinder motor with 200-horsepower gave the Blitzen Benz a top speed of 228 km/h – the speed which Bob Burman achieved in 1911 on Daytona Beach. Blitz in German means “lightning” so the cars name is literally “Lightning Benz”. ![]() The Scans. | Re: Blitzen Benz (MB Enthusiast) Pretty insane engine capacity for a 4-cylinder huh? Back in those days though, they needed big displacement engines to extract as much horsepower as possible. The technology wasn't as advanced as it was today. If you gave those guys back then a Lancer Evolution FQ-400 and tell thim this thing makes nearly 400-hp out of 2.0 liters, they'd crap their pants. ![]() |
