Over $134 million worth of BMWs

Short of visiting a BMW factory, you are probably not going to see so many BMWs in the same place, much less an entire fleet of their flagship 7-series limousine.

But parked right here in Singapore, waiting for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meets happening next week, is that very fleet.

There were some 545 BMW saloons handed over to the organisers of the meetings yesterday, but we only got to stand among the army of 451 BMW 730Li (not that we could tell the difference). The rest of the vehicles to be used are 53 5-series and 41 3-series saloons.

These BMWs are actually bought by people already, but they get a discount for lending their BMWs for the IMF/World Bank meetings. These cars would be chauffeured around by interested parties who were shortlisted from an application drive.

And for those of you who haven't heard the news yet, Singapore is banning all outdoor demonstrations. This restriction certainly riled a lot of protests from the demonstrators who planned to appear in Singapore for peaceful demonstrations. However, a 10 by 5 metre indoor protest site is set aside for those who want to do so. While the Singapore Government hears these views, its stand is that since the 1980s Singapore has had strict laws on protests that it is unwilling to retract for the meeting's sake.
