Favorites for the U.S open.

Please name your favorites to win the Tennis U.S Open. Just thought we should have a little thread about this.

I want Andre Agassi to win

Re: Favorites for the U.S open.

I think Andy Roddick will do well. He's one of the few who could beat Federer. I think the Fed Express has slowed recently. He was not too impressive at the Rogers Cup in Canada.

Agassi won't win. I used to despise Andre. He was such a jerk when he first started playing, but I suppose he's made up for it.

I wonder how many matches will end early with the losing playing "retiring" with some cramp, leg injury, stomach ache.

Re: Favorites for the U.S open.

I think that Andy Roddick now coaches by Conners will do well....... but i dont think Agassi will beat Baghdatis of Cyprus in the second round.

Re: Favorites for the U.S open.

Looks like we're the only two in the thread. I thought there'd be more tennis fans on this site.

I dislike guys with huge serves because I don't notice the rest of their game. Sampras had a huge serve, but he was a great all-around player. Yet I keep thinking of him as a server. Perhaps Roddick will beat Fed in the finals.

Personally, I'm still a huge Stefan Edberg fan. I met him at a tournament when he was No. 1. He is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, one of the classiest athletes ever. It really bothered me to see so-called elite athletes retire from matches during the French Open. Henin-Hardenne retired from a championship match with a stomach problem. It's funny how no one noticed she was struggling before she retired.

Re: Favorites for the U.S open.

I'm not following tennis anymore like I once used to. Nowadays the interesting thing would be to see if Federer will break Sampras' record.
And that would be my only criteria for wanting to see him win. Sampras was a gentleman, but it's always interesting to see records broken.

Of the past players, I used to like Bjorn Borg.

Re: Favorites for the U.S open.

The Agassi-Baghdatis match was the greatest match I have ever seen. Saturday matches are rained out so Agassi versus B. Becker goes Sunday morning. I'd love to see Agassi v. Roddick. I think Federer falls whenever he faces Roddick. I wonder what the odds on Roddick are.

I tried to watch the ladies' matches and it is just dreadful. The game is all about glam and celebrity. I'm tired of reading about Sharapova talk about wanting more endorsements! She's won a single Wimbledon and she's not even that attractive! The ladies tour sometimes goes overboard with their promotion and hyping celebrity, sex appeal over actual ability. In the past, they have paraded around players who have no interest in the mega endorsements and marketing, hype machine. This glam factor is cheapening the ladies game.

I just feel that players earning 10-times their prize money through endorsements are moving themselves too far away from their sport. Is Beckham a footballer or a mega celebrity of the Paris Hilton variety? Is Sharapova first a tennis player or some product endorsing celeb?

Re: Favorites for the U.S open.

Great run by Andre, but the miles on the body finally caught up with him. I still remember the bratty, petulant jerk that Andre was when he first started, but I too think very highly of him today. Sampras has won more Grand Slam events, but never won the French Open. Agassi won the career Grand Slam. Lendl, Edberg, Becker, Wilander, Borg all failed to complete the slam.
