New York property tycoon Donald Trump has filed a US$5 billion lawsuit against a writer for The New York Times who dared suggest he is not nearly as rich as he claims.

I find this so funny - on his TV show, it is obvious that Donald Trump is completely obsessed with the cachet of the title "billionaire" - Trump's show is a shameless display of capitalism at it's most obscene - I quite like Mr.Trump though - sure, he's totally materialistic and self-indulgent...but he does have character.

If Trump isn't actually a billionaire, he sure is trying hard to be one - a quick Google search.... and he seems to be sueing everyone.

How ridiculous.... a 1 billion dollar lawsuit. You know what, I'm glad that jackass isn't a billionair. If he wants to be one THAT bad, then sell your gold covered apartment (it looks horrible by the way).

No warot - you misread - he is sueing that NY Times reporter for $5 billion US!!!.

Good luck to him....but I can't see much coming of it - surely the American courts have got better things to do than deal with this kind of rubbish.

No I got it, I was reading one of the other ones, although it probably would have made more sense to mention the 5 billion dollar lawsuit instead.

This guy has alot of ego, thats all I have to say. Damn hes so much into himself to actually sue a guy that claims that, I mean hell, what if I guy says Im worth nothing lol. To each his own man, just chill lol.

I haven't seen how the NY Times estimated what he's worth, but Trump's main assets are privately held so it's difficult to gauge what the true net asset values are. Each year after the Forbes lists are released, he says the estimates of his worth are low and they're usually in the two billion dollar range so there is a big gap between theirs and the Times' number.

The HK investors had a majority ownership in the NYC property. If they deemed the price is right, they can sell so long as it's not an arms-length transaction. I've owned shares in companies that were sold or takeover for a pittance. If the majority of the shareowners agree and there were no sinister backroom deals, there's nothing more to the story.
