| Re: New iPod Touch I agree. I will defend an Ipod anytime. I think it's an amazing MP3 player. And it shows I'm not some anti-apple person. The iphone on the other hand is just the latest example that apple is evolving to something it dreaded to be at the beginning: a high market brand name where the image is more than the product. The iphone is an accessory, a gadget, something to look good with. |

The point is that the iPhone sports a superior usability experience. It's the killer app in and of itself. As for the indictment that iPhones showy lifestyle accessories - For crap's sake man, cell phones have been de facto status gadgets since day one! How many times over the past 5 years have you seen a pack of guys down at the food court with gigantic smartphones clipped to their hip as though they were six-shooters? Do you think all of them actually need those over-the-top phones? How many just wanted to buy the most expensive thing at the Verizon store? So to point a finger at the iPhone as some kind of harbinger of consumerist excess is no different than saying "look at those assholes in their E92 coupes! Who do they think they are?" I think I've discovered a pattern with con-iPhone types: Most of them are "cell phone aficionados" who resent the fact that Apple has used its clout, assets and resources to brutally muscle their way into terriorty already occupied by brands who already have a strong and devoted following. People tend to love their gadgets - especially if they're expensive lifestyle devices like smartphones that live with you on a persistent basis. The iPhone has brought many a neophyte to the smartphone table who are ooh'ed and awww'ed by its razzle-dazzle capabilities - meanwhile veteran smartphone users, who really know their tech, are up in the belfry crying "We've been doing that crap for years! What's wrong with you idiots? Are you so blind as to not see that other brands have been doing the same thing for cheaper?!" But what the aforementioned aficionados fail to see is that the value of the iPhone doesn't come bulleted list of acronyms, or any specific technology that it has onboard - it comes from Apple's expertise as a developer of user-friendly software. What Apple lacks in the cell phone arena - in the eyes of experts - is "heritage." Of couse, we're talking about an industry that's only a decade old, but people still seem rather protectionist about the industry they adore. I guarantee you if the iPhone came from the likes of Sony Ericson, Nokia or Samsung the same people who are panning it would be singing its praises. And here I am giving another dumb sermon on behalf of Apple. I don't know why I type these things...

Apple didn't muscle their way into Cell phone biz...it's their fans who bought it. Most people who buy "smart phones" are businessmen or people who need them for their jobs. Most people who bought the Iphone are just the people who want the latest and greatest and a good amount of those people are apple fanboys. See, you are sitting here defending Apple but I'm sitting here defending the rest of the companies who make better products. Like I said, feature for feature the Iphone is nothing. But you add that beautiful interface and design; that is what makes the iphone special. And I guarantee you that if this same phone came from Sony, Nokia or Samsung, lacking basic features that their "low end" phones have people will be talking sh!t, especially if you couldn't even change your own damn battery. Believe me, Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung fans are lot more open minded than Apple fans.

In the end, I think it comes down to the same kind of argument that frames the whole Mac vs PC question. The PC enthusiast camp looks down on Apple as a purveyor of overpriced designer hardware with an OS that's all window dressing. Apple users, on the other hand, regard Windows as a cumbersome turd of an OS. The value of the iPhone is the OS. If you think the iPhone's user experience is all hot gas then there's nothing more to discuss. | Re: New iPod Touch IMO the ipod touch is much too expensive, if it have over 100gb I'd consider it, but with only 16gb I'd only be able to get a few movies, and not all my music collection on it. I'm sticking with my 8gb nano, and will wait until flash prices fall, and larger capacities come out! |
