yes it is true. richer than bill gates. he has the ultimate monopoly over mexico...his fortune represents 7% of the countrys annual evonomic output. (At john D, Rocketfellers's height, it was equal to 2.5% of US gross domestic product)

A few wealthy while millions are poor.

When I lived in Cali I was struck but the huge contrast between the way people were living. The poor and wealthy areas were contrasting like night and day. Side by side even!

17 years old girls driving white C230 with AMG-kit while others are homeless begging for money with their children at Venice Beach.

I have not even seen anything like that in Sweden.

Re: --->>> Carlos Slim....worlds Richest Man <<<----

Come on people! When you here that Bill Gates or Warren Buffet are the riches people on earth, DON'T BELIEVE IT! There the riches internationally known people. I read an article a few your's ago, I think it was in 2004, where the man who owned the patent for glass died. He gave each of his 4 grand childen 16.5 billion dollars, and left his only son 3 billion dollars. That's a total of 69 billion dollars, this is around the same time they were saying Bill Gates was #1 will 46 Billion. Just my two cents!

Re: --->>> Carlos Slim....worlds Richest Man <<<----

For his sake, it's better for him if he doesn't become the world's richest man. As some of you have already said, Mexico is a very poor country. For the world's richest man to have made his fortune from such a poor country would not inspire much national pride. He'd probably be resented a lot more than he already is. I bet the average Mexican doesn't know that Slim is now the world's richest. If I was him, I'd sleep better if they never found out.

Unless you can prove what your claims, I think that is a grossly unfair statement against him. He has built businesses from scratch and he has also taken existing businesses over, so I think he has built wealth by his own hand and he has also built tons of wealth for his stockholders. Look at the returns, especially from 2003-on, from his companies. The sheer magnitude of his wealth and the reach of his businesses might inspire jealously and resentment back home, but he hasn't been charged with any wrongdoing. Having said that, many of his critics still insist he is some mega crook.

He kind of is a crook. In under-developed countries it is very common for politicians to use their political power and network to gain control over TV stations, Telecom corporations and other very significant industries. Bribery has probably also been one of his tools. He's by no means alone in this. There are most likely a handful of other guys accompanied him to the top.

I don't think he is more of a crook than any proverbial used car or snake oil salesman because no one can prove anything against him. If anyone can prove his crimes, I'm sure that plenty of Mexicans would like to see him fall from grace.

He has by no means blood money, neither do I believe that he has acquired his wealth using illegal practices.
He is a clever money maker who has most likely engaged in lobbying and perhaps even privatized companies which he has later bought himself into.

You can't say that he has played the game like Richard Bransson or Ingvar Kamprad. Carlos (not so)Slim has been playing Super Mario with cheat codes.

Then again who am I to hate him? This is what it's all about, get that dough in anyway possible. He does deserve kudos .

Many people in Mexico are most likely dead jealous and he probably walks around with 10 body guards every day.
