Nintendo : Back On Top ? This is just whats going on in Japan but a good indicator of the future. Bloomberg: DS outshipping PSP 3-to-1 in Japan - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER About 5 million units of Sony's portable have shipped in its home country, compared to almost 15 million DS units. By Tim Surette, GameSpot Posted Mar 15, 2007 10:27 am PT Much of the recent attention on console shipment numbers has focused on the late-2006 launches of the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii, but the two companies are battling each other in another sector as well. The PlayStation Portable and DS are duking it out in the portable space, and according to news service Bloomberg, it's a bit of a lopsided affair in the consoles' home country of Japan. Sony has confirmed that it has shipped 5 million PSPs in the island country through the end of January, compared to 14.4 million DSs shipped in Japan through 2006. Both consoles went on sale in the country in December 2004. As for their living-room counterparts, Bloomberg cites Japanese research firm Enterbrain as saying that 1.69 million Wiis and 700,747 PS3s have been sold in Japan through late February. thoughts?

Re: Nintendo : Back On Top ? Below are the US Stats: The industry-tracking NPD Group released its February tallies for the US gaming market Thursday evening, and the numbers show significant growth in both hardware and software sales year-over-year. Game sales were up nearly 28 percent from $345 million to $441 million, while hardware sales nearly doubled. For February 2006, gaming hardware accounted for $203 million in the US, while last month's system sales added up to $402 million. Combining those numbers with accessory sales, the industry as a whole was up more than 53 percent, from $639 million to $978 million. On the hardware side, Nintendo's DS led the way, selling 485,000 systems during February. Its console counterpart was the second-best-selling system, as 335,000 Wiis were sold in the US. Domestically, the Xbox 360 sold around 228,000, while Sony saw its older hardware outselling newer offerings. The PlayStation 2 moved 295,000 units, followed by the PlayStation Portable's 176,000, and the PlayStation 3's 127,000. While Nintendo posted the best numbers in the hardware sector, it was a Microsoft game that claimed the top of the software sales charts. Sporting a coveted invite to the Halo 3 beta testing program, the Xbox 360 game Crackdown had the top of the charts on lockdown for February, selling 427,000 copies during the briefest of months.

Re: Nintendo : Back On Top ? Nintendo never went anywhere when it comes to the handheld market. I mean c'mon the GameBoy is as old as most of us on this site. So for Sony's first handheld to sell 5million isn't a bad thing. This is just more people jumping on the "Down with Sony" bandwagon. People are not looking at this for what it truly is but rather spinning it to make it seem like "OMFG Sony is Teh Luz0rs". Considering that Nintendo doesn't really have anything new with the wii unless you consider Mario and Zelda for like 30000th time new then sure Nintendo is on top...but otherwise no. the PS3 and Xbox 360 cost twice as much as the Wii. I don't know why the Wii gets praised so much, besides the the Wiimote there is nothing new. The graphics are like 10% better than the GameCube and the games are the same exact cutesey Nintendo franchises. ps...The PS3 hasn't started selling in Europe yet. Wait 'til the war is over before you wave the flag of victory. ![]()

Re: Nintendo : Back On Top ? There is mystery to why the DS is selling more than the PSP. due to the lack of an advanced processor, video and music playback the DS is half as expensive as the PSP. My psychic powers tells that Nintendo will lose this console war as well. Wii sales are bound to slow down signifigantly in 1-2 years. I remember when I saw official Wii trailers on youtube for the first time. There was like ten people standing behind one single dude in a living room. The people were cheering like monkeys while the dude was swining the wiimote like Crazy. My first thought was "Wow, I never knew you can engage half your neigbourhood into a game with one single controller." When I finally got a chance play some Wiiwii I was underwhelmed. Sure it was fun and cool but after ten minutes or so you get over it. It was no way near as fun as it looked in the trailers. As for Sony I think they are twats. Everything they sell is overpriced. The PS3 sells for 500 and 600 dollar, add an additional controller and two games and you are suddenly not far away from the 1000 dollar mark.

Re: Nintendo : Back On Top ? Please tell me how the PS3 is overpriced when a comparable system is only $100 less yet lacks so many things that the ps3 has? My friend the reason sony costs so much is because they don't compromise....Blu-ray and Cell aint cheap and neither is the RSX Gpu. Not to mention you don't have to pay a dime to play online.

Re: Nintendo : Back On Top ? I don't think Nintendo is back on "Top" by any means - at least if you remember the heyday of the NES and use that as a point of reference. I don't think any 1st party will be so monolithically powerful ever again. But I do think Nintendo is back on their game - With the Wii and DS they've proven that innovations and ideas can trump the brute force of "tech wow." I think it's still to early to make definitive predicions on how the current console war is going to resolve itself. However, I'm starting to wonder if Sony now has buyer's remorce on all the technology they've loaded-down on the PS3. Time will tell... And more specifically - Christmas '07 will tell.

Re: Nintendo : Back On Top ? a major difference is that Wii is making a profit for nintendo, while sony are losing up2 100Dollars per Console in the first 1-2 years,.. its all about profit, it gives nintendo the resources 2 invest in more high tech stuff.....look at the next nintendo console, it can be upgraded heavily, while i cant see sony upgrading there system within the next4-6years...
