This month Clint Eastwood’s film about the heroes of Iwo Jima, Flags Of Our Fathers (2006), became the most recent offering in a long list of motion pictures about the United States armed forces and the men and women who fight our nation’s wars. The triumph and tragedy of war, the action-adventure quality of military life, and the classic military clash of good and evil have always been prime subject matter for every story-telling media. Movies about the American military and America’s wars have been a staple of the American film industry and have spanned the spectrum from pro-U.S. propaganda to virulent anti-war propaganda. Motion pictures, like all art forms, appeal or don’t appeal to different people for different reasons. By any measure motion pictures about the U.S. military have been more positive than negative over the years toward American men and women in uniform and the institution of which they are a part. The best of the genre accurately portray the sacrifice and hardship American service men and women have endured in defense of their country, and for each other, and they serve as a reminder that the freedom we enjoy is not free.
