| Mazda2 three-door to debut at Geneva Show ![]() The new Mazda2 three-door hatchback will make its world premiere at Geneva’s Motor Show in March, marking the first time in the model’s history that a three-door variant is being made available. The latest version will feature the same powertrain lineup as the older five-door – 1.3L and 1.5L petrol engines and a 1.4L turbodiesel – and will offer the same performance and fuel economy as the two cars weigh almost the same. Like the five-door, the new three-door weighs in at less than 1,000kg and despite the low kerb weight it should still score a 5-Star Euro-NCAP safety rating just as its bigger brother did last December. This latest announcement brings the Mazda2 range to a total of three vehicles, the other two cars being the regular five-door and Chinese market sedan model. Now all we need is the high-performance MPS-Mazdaspeed version. Mazda will also use the Geneva show for the European debut of the Taiki concept car and next-generation rotary engine, the Mazda5 Hydrogen RE Hybrid and the facelifted RX-8 sports car. | Re: Mazda2 three-door to debut at Geneva Show Mazda2 for America, with diesels? Posted Mar 3rd 2008 7:58PM By Michael Harley As Mazda watches the North American auto market become more like the European market, we just may see the Mazda2 itself on our shores, in addition to the Ford Fiesta. And there is a good chance it may arrive with a diesel powerplant. These revelations spilled from the mouth of Jim O'Sullivan, president of Mazda North American, while sharing sandwiches with reporters over lunch in Detroit. The Mazda2 four-door, introduced in Geneva last year, has been a hot seller overseas. The three-door Mazda2, set to debut at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show tomorrow, is expected to be just as well received. O'Sullivan rightfully pointed out that the passenger car market in the United States is showing signs of evolving. Smaller cars are becoming more widespread and accepted (witness the 20,000 pre-orders for the Smart fortwo), and the compact Mazda3 has historically sold very well. While we welcome a Mazda2 in gas or diesel trim, bring us a Mazdaspeed2 like this, and if it is anything like the Mazdaspeed3, we'll be first in line. - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER |

| Re: Mazda2 three-door to debut at Geneva Show Mazda2 3-door hatchback debuts The first ever three-door Mazda2 hatchback debuted today at the Geneva auto show, following a teaser image from January. Up until now, the Mazda2 has only ever been offered as a five-door hatch or four-door sedan, both of which were redesigned for the 2008 model year. It's not known if any of the Mazda2 variants will be sold in the United States. That said, it's more likely the three-door hatchback will be sold here than the five-door variant. The next-generation Ford Fiesta, which is based on the Mazda2, is already expected to come to America. Like the five-door, this latest Mazda2 model is offered with 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter gasoline engines, or a 1.4-liter turbo diesel. The three-door Mazda2 shares the same overall dimensions as the five-door and achieves a similarly modest curb weight. Mazda2 three-door’s superior passive safety package includes six airbags (depending on grade), ABS, electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist, and DSC stability control.
