What do you guys feel about the MX5?

I was browsing through cars that fell within my budget, and I spotted a roadster that caught my eye: the NA Mazda MX5. It comes in either 1.6M or 1.8A. We've viewed a few already, and most if not all of them are modded. It's difficult to find a stock MX5 around these days. Nevertheless, it presents good value and it's cheap to maintain, good to drive and pretty chic. What do you guys think about this, is it a good first car?

Thanks for your comments...

Re: What do you guys feel about the MX5?

It has a very good reputation for reliability .....the guys from Top Gear always speak kindly of it (both old and new models) -- I think it would be a good choice James ......but I'm no expert on the matter.

Oh ...it has retractable headlights too

Re: What do you guys feel about the MX5?

I'm a big MX5. It is a great car for those who want the sports car experience but cannot afford a Boxster or an M3. On top of that it is a pretty economical car to own. Just try to find a model which isn't more than 10 years old.

Thanks for the comments Rob. I like those retractable headlights, a neat retro touch.

Thanks Luw. But if I find a MX5 that isn't more than 10 years old it will be either the NB or NC MX5, both of which are too expensive. The NB is a facelift of the NA and it loses its retractable headlights (my favourite!) and people say it loses some of the simple form factor of the NA MX5.

Re: What do you guys feel about the MX5?

Economical, dependable, Fun. Very cool little car.

Might I suggest you to go for the Second Generation (NB) models as it's easier to find a tidy one, rather than looking for a tidy First Generation (NA) model.

Thanks for your suggestion. I've been looking at NB models, and they are really overpriced! Nearly double that of NA models...
