Maybach Hikes Prices of 2008 Models by $3,500

MONTVALE, N.J. — Despite disappointing U.S. sales, Maybach has raised prices on its 2008 lineup. The 2008 Maybach 57 starts at $341,750, including a $2,750 destination charge, reflecting a $3,500 price increase over the 2007 model. The top-of-the-line 2008 Maybach 62 S starts at $432,250, including shipping, reflecting a $3,500 price increase over the outgoing model.

The base 2007 Maybach 57 with a 5.5-liter V12 and a five-speed automatic transmission started at $338,250.

The 2008 Maybach pricing strategy positions the ultra-luxe Mercedes-Benz brand virtually neck-in-neck with Rolls-Royce's Phantom sedan. The 2008 Phantom sedan starts at $342,000, including a $2,000 destination charge.

The midrange 2008 Maybach 57 S starts at $381,250, while the Maybach 62 starts at $392,750, including shipping.

When Maybach first hit the U.S. market six years ago, it set an initial sales target of approximately 600 units per year. But sales have been disappointing, with less than150 units sold in 2006.

What this means to you: It seems counterintuitive to raise prices on the slow-selling Maybach. Is added expense supposed to make it even more desirable to the affluent elite?

I guess these increases are not going to worry the clientèle too much.

What is the depreciation like on a Maybach -- like how much would an unsold 2006 Maybach 57 cost me in the USA as opposed to a 2007 model?
