AMG's philosophy, according to their website, is to basically provide a "high performance Mercedes with the core Mercedes values such as comfort etc.". I've driven the SLK32 AMG and E55 AMG, never mind the SLK32 AMG but I found the E55 AMG to be an enjoyable car to drive. Insane power and acceleration, and surprisingly good handling too- a perfect compromise between everyday family car and weekend track car. Of course the home of the E55 AMG is not on the track, but for someone seeking some fun, an E55 AMG is capable enough on the track, but not capable enough against a BMW M5. And this is where the difference lies: M's are more geared at the purist driver and track performance. AMG's are made for the guy who likes to have a balance between sport and luxury. It's really that simple. Yet some people like to make it look as if AMG's were meant to rival BMW M's (and I'm not pointing fingers at you Just_Me but at other folks on other forums who just don't stop and think for a second about the PURPOSE behind these cars.). For my needs, that E55 AMG had enough "driving feel", particularly the kind I was looking for. I want to have a nice roomy car with "decent performance" (E55 AMG is too much for me, I'd prefer maybe an E280 or an E280 CDI / E320 CDI) and some sporty capabilities. For someone like me, a standard E-Class with the Sport Package would be just fine. I've driven the Sport Package equipped E-Class. Nice, if a bit uncomfortable but that's the price you pay for EXCELLENT HANDLING and SHARP STEERING. ![]()

wow relax Caw like I told sunnyman before, I dont think AMD drives rubbish but the driving experience is different compared to M. I' driven E55 and that car was just too soft for me. I felt more engaged in BMW M but it doesnt make AMG a rubbish car now does it? But it doesnt suit my personality so to speak but I understand those who choose AMG instead cause the cars arent rubbish, at least not in my eyes but apparently sunny man dont agree with me and you ![]()

Oh I am not mad or anything. AMG and M are two completely different philosophies. However, on numerous car forums, most of the M fans seem to think that AMG's "have to drive like BMW M's" because they're "competitors". They're not. Both these divisions have different ideals and standards, which are mostly geared towards their customers. It is their individual formula that sells. The majority of AMG owners wouldn't feel comfortable in a BMW M for example, while the same goes for BMW M customers not feeling at home in an AMG product. It's that simple. To end the argument, let's use the famous expression: "To each his own". ![]()
