That's never made much sense to me. BMW claims to make the sportiest upscale vehicles right? Well how come they have know answer for the SLR and R8? If you ask me they need 2 new models, a supercar to compete against the SLR, and a supercoupe to battle the R8 V10!

As for SLR, I'd rather have BMW make sporty cars I can afford to own and enjoy than a super expensive car I can use to win internet forum pissing contests. They are great to fantasize about when you are 13, not 30.

R8 on the other hand is in the affordable list for lot of people and I wish BMW would make something to compete in that segment - but the next M3 CSL would probably do that anyway.

BMW philosphy is the make sporty and handle good in all models, from 1er - 7er, doesnt matter which engine. I never heard them claim that they need a car in every segement becuase the competition have model bmw dont have, then they need to build one. Just because they make sporty cars doesnt mean they must have a supercar, main point is that they keep the promise to make all existing cars sporty.

Re: Edmunds Inside Line - 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series vs. 2007 BMW M6

depends on what it ends up to be..
a SL competitor or a R8 comepetitor..
given the old Z8 it looks more like a coming SL competitor..
and hey i aint bitchin..i love that idea..
but still is it really a super car?

It'll probably be step by step; 1st an SL competitor, then R8 and then (if needed and i hope it will be needed) some nice sc...

I understand your point of view, we just have a difference of opinion when it comes to this. To me it's like a track and field event, if you ask who has the strongest team as a whole you'd say BMW, but if you ask who's the single best athlete then Audi's R8 and Mercedes SLR would be the best in their respected segments. Both more capable sports cars then BMW's top performers. I believe BMW needs to address this.
