Re: AMS: Porsche 911 Turbo AUTOMATIC vs. MANUAL gearbox

Porsche and M3 V8 seem to be getting same type of gearbox. SMg and DSg combine into one and same gearbox

Re: AMS: Porsche 911 Turbo AUTOMATIC vs. MANUAL gearbox

Ultimately, a performance oriented DSG/SMG type of transmission will make the 911 Turbo complete as a performance sports car.

Having said that, the Tiptronic Automatic transmission that Porsche has been using for the 997 is a fine piece of machinery when you leave it in automatic mode. Very fast shifts, active downshifting when braking, holding a gear when cornering hard to prevent unwanted shifting through a corner......

Sound familiar to any other performance tuned automatic transmission out there? Here's a hint: what other manufacturer makes a 5 speed automatic gearbox capable of handling high torque values like the 911 Turbo would create?......

You guessed it: Mercedes AMG Speedshift automatic transmission. It is not talked about a lot, but Mercedes AMG provides the 5 speed automatic transmissions for the 996 and 997, with the 997 getting the newer version from the C55/E55/SL55.

I always thought Porsches used ZF transmissions.

Re: AMS: Porsche 911 Turbo AUTOMATIC vs. MANUAL gearbox

On one of the Porsche forums, there was a Tiptronic 996 Turbo which needed some major transmission work. When the transmission was exposed, there was a 3 point star (MB symbol) on the casing. Nobody has seen that (yet) on the 997's, but I'm willing to bet that the latest Tiptronic on the 997 Turbo is also provided by MB AMG.

I did some research and here's what I got... I believe the TipS from 1995 is still the same one used today. It is possible that Mercedes is also using ZF 5 speeders.

Tiptronic was developed in conjunction by Porsche, ZF and Bosch. Porsche originated the idea, ZF made the gearbox
and Bosch responsible for the electronic control.

In 1995, a newer version called Tiptronic S launched. It offers fingertip control button mounted on the steering wheel spoke, thus allow the driver can to shift without loosing concentration on the road.

That website you're referring to has not been updated since 2003. Anyways, I doubt the 997 is using the original 1995 Tiptronic S version. Remember that the term "Tiptronic" is just a name licensed and used by Porsche. They can completely change the transmission over time (including switching to the transmissions made by MB AMG), but still call it "Tiptronic" on their cars (Just like how MB AMG uses the term "Speedshift" for all their cars, but we know there have been multiple versions over time.)
