Take Your Pick: Mercedes B200T vs. VW Golf GTI

I must say first, that this comparison is more selfish than anything else... Because while my sis shopped for the GTI (she didn't buy it in the end), we also looked at the B-Class, and I found it to be a very close match with the GTI, in terms of power at least. The price isn't too far either - Mercedes will give some rebates off the sticker price, but VW will most probably sell at list - that means both cars are almost priced similarly, if not the GTI a little cheaper.

I did not include the A-Class because I felt the B-Class was a better suited competitor to the GTI... Personal bias, sorry.

So which one would you take, and why?

Mercedes' Turbo B-Class
SGD130k (list price)
197bhp, 280Nm
FWD
0-100 in 7.6 seconds
CVT

Volkswagen Mkv GTI - The Legend
SGD121k (list price)
200bhp, 280Nm
FWD
0-100 in 6.9 seconds
DSG

Re: Take Your Pick: Mercedes B200T vs. VW Golf GTI

I had some time in pondering about this... And I chose the GTI, though with much difficulty.

I like the DSG gearbox, the history to go with it and the awesome engine.

Mercedes ownership is very tempting, especially if I can do so at a Volkswagen price... But I believe the B-Class is more suited for the comfort-oriented buyer. I can see the merits of the B-Class, it's a really handsome car and I can almost be certain it will be more comfortable than the GTI. It also packs a punch from that I4 turbo.

Re: Take Your Pick: Mercedes B200T vs. VW Golf GTI

Personally, VW Golf GTi. I had a look at both last year. the B200T cost like $50k AUD drive way while the GTi is around $43k AUD drive away, so the GTi is a lot cheaper. The GTI wins on exterior, interior styling, performance, handling, possibly refinement. The B-class has better build quality but the material quality aren't as good as the GTi.

If your sister is buying it, i will tell her to get a B class, cause it is more of a girl's car and her friends will be impressed because it is a Mercedes, even though it is not up to the usual MB standards. It is a more comfortable daily drive car, and i am guessing the insurance will be cheaper?
