I really like the extra wood on the inside, upgrades the interior, maybe the ML will get it eventually.... I think it looks real good, but from some angles the front lights look a little lexus-like.. I really like the new rims as well.

Re: New MB GL-class officially unvield

It looks ok, but it looks just like every other SUV on the road. Nothing really distinctive IMO and here in the U.S. it will face some stiff new competition from Cadillac in the form of their revolutionized Escalade.

Mercedes missed a grand chance to fix up the interior of the GL compared to the R/ML. Going by these pics it looks the same as the ML which is a huge mistake for the prices they're going to be charging for this thing.

Overall I'm not impressed at all.

Yet the hallmark Mercedes off-roader genes such as superlative robustness, ruggedness and long-term durability have not been compromised. It is not for nothing that the model designation echoes the legendary precursor of all Mercedes-Benz off-road vehicles – the G-Class. The evergreen off-roader is now entering its 26th year of production and will continue to be marketed alongside the new GL-Class.

I do like this piece of news though. I just hope this doesn't cause confusion by having a GL and a G.

M

I'm with you on this one, I'm not impressed at all
Why make this thing in the first place? Is it because it has a third row seat? Or is it because it's bigger than the ML? If I wanted a third row, I'd go for the R.

Come on MB, I can name a couple of cheaper brand SUV's that look a lot better than this.

Re: New MB GL-class officially unvield

Yeah MB is still learning its way with SUVs it seems. I blame it on management that seems to still be trying to save a few dollars on interior fittings. Besides that this thing is to uncomfortably similar to another brand's truck around the same size - in the way it looks. I really don't like that.

I am pleased that they are going with the new engines from the start and not the old SOHC V8s. Yeesh! The interior is the biggest weak spot here. It clearly isn't up to the Lexus/VW/Land Rover/BMW standards in this class.

If they had just come up with a different, higher-quality interior for this GL I could live with everything else. The engines and spec sound good, but for the price Mercedes is going to be asking, remember this GL will be positioned above the ML and R-Classes, the interior should have been at least on the CLS level if not the S-Class level. Hell build it in Germany if you can't get the desired quality/skill out of the U.S. plant.

The R-Class is already having a tough time here in the U.S. It does sell, but not at the numbers Mercedes had hoped, and I think the two main reasons are a high-price/low standard equipment and a interior that isn't equal to the asking prices.

This is going to be the case with the GL too I predict.

M

Another thing I notcied in the interior that I wish the ML had was leather on doors! Look at the door and it has stiched leather.... nice touch, but I do agree that it is too similair to the ML. Should have been upgraded some more...

Re: New MB GL-class officially unvield

Yeah the extra wood makes it look a bit more exclusive. The car looks really bland in silver but so does most MB cars but I love the way it looks in black. The dim light aren't that bad either.
