No I don't think these cars were designed to break like that. It depends on the impact point.
Do you imagine:

"- Well, so in case of a side crash, what did you decided?

-I think we should make the car break in two approximatively on the rear seats. So the driver will remain unharmed.

- And the rear passengers? Unharmed, if the car breaks in two where they seat?

- No. Not at all. They would be killed, surely. But I discussed with Frank, from the marketing. He said that first, there are not always rear passengers, and that second, it is the driver that buy the car, not the kid on the rear. If the driver is killed he won't buy a new Audi. If the kid is killed, the driver will may buy a new one.

- Ok, then, let's kill the kids at the rear!"

I don't think Audi even imagined that their cars could be break in two, this is a very rare accident, side against tree!!
