Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2006: PS3 screens (WOW!)

Screens of games, still in development on beta PS3 development kits (from which more than 14,000 have shipped out since the GDC)
Note that some of the pics are taken with a digital cam from moving images on a screen, so it is note the best quality. This is because the screens are from beta versions of the games, running on incomplete hardware, and was only meant for the eyes of other developers, not the press

Sony is leaking photos to the press to prevent people from buying the Xbox 360. They are so stupid.

PS. If the PS3 has a blu-ray and will sell for less than 500 euro i will probably get one also.

Hard to judge from screenshots of beta games... because we don't know if those are actually game scenes, or movies.

Eitherway, I can't wait for the release to see if the cell processor is really as fast as it's cracked up to be.

Re: Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2006: PS3 screens (WOW!)

Bah. Hype, hype and more hype.

When the PS2 was in prelaunch we were treated to outrageous demos that suggested we were on the cusp of some kind of graphic processing revolution. What did we get? Underwhelming 1st gen software that had serious issues crating anti-aliased graphics.

Sony is in a tough spot because the PS3's delay has given Microsoft a massive windfall in the form a competition-free Summer. PS3's graphics appear stunning, but how more stunning can we expect these games to be when compared to the 2nd wave of XBox 360 software? Will it matter?

My guess is no. I predict that the installed base for the 360 will have hit critical mass by the time September rolls around. Publisher momentum will swing in Microsoft's favor and the PS3 will have to settle for a reduced market share despite having spectacular graphics.

Re: Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2006: PS3 screens (WOW!)

The Sony hype machine is working overtime - they've always had more bark than bite. I'm not even sure they've got working models of the PS3 itself, yet. Those graphics look pretty decent, but we'll see whether they're actually gameplay graphics, movies, or what.

I'm quite sure that the 360 will have a sizeable advantage in sales in America, at least. Once the PS3 launches then you can bet MS will have some sort of price cut, or big launch, just to steal their thunder.

In Japan, however, I would say the PS3 might be more competitive. Sony has more brand equity there, I think, and a better history with the developers. But time will tell - even there, the 360 is making headway.

Re: Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2006: PS3 screens (WOW!)

Without a doubt, this generation of consoles will mark the beginning of a rift between Japan and the US. Not just in the adoption of platforms, but in the kind of content that's consumed and produced.

It's easy to see that Microsoft will enter '07 with the edge. Even if PS3 has an explosive debut (don't they always), it won't be enough to overcome Microsoft's installed base. On the other side of the pond, the Xbox is a curiousity and the PS3 will be universally adopted without question.

What's this mean for publishers? Well, I think we're going to see the start of a serious rift between Japano-software and American-ish software, and that could spell more trouble for Sony. Unless PS3 leaves preconceptions in the dust, we'll probably start seeing more "American relevent" content for the Xbox that speaks directly to Western tastes (Halo is a good example).

Word on the street has me convinced that the issue is already said and done. My cousin, who's been a lifelong hardcore gamer, has no second thoughts about sticking with Xbox. Same goes for most of my buddies.

No. The whole mainstream market is brainwashed by the Playstation brand. This coming generation will be in solid Sony hands again if they do nothing stupid with the PS3, like pricing it to high heavens.

I am expecting the same difference between PS2 and Xbox 1, the only true wildcard next gen is the Nintendo Revolution (working codename). That machine has the potential to come out number 1 next gen, and put Nintendo, the innovator of the industry, back on the absolute number 1 spot:

Re: Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2006: PS3 screens (WOW!)

After hearing so many ancedotal stories of PS2 grief, involving fried units and the like, I'm very skeptical about the equity being projected onto the PlayStation brand. However, I'm of the mind that PlayStation has more sway in Europe.

The PlayStation became popular, not just because of clever branding or solid games, but because it was the right system at the right time. This goes all the way back to PlayStation vs Sega Saturn. Sega didn't plan well and delivered a system that was ill-fitted to consumer tastes, and delivered an initial software library that didn't exploit the Saturn's strengths (namely, 2d graphics - a la Capcom games).

My point is that there's nothing terribly special that ties people to the PlayStation. Nintendo used to have an army of killer apps that gave them the midas touch, even when they screwed up. Sony has some of that mojo, but their exclusives are essentially neutralized by the Xbox's exclusives (especially with the Halo franchise).

Look at the two on paper and they virtually blend into one another. They're both feature-laden multimedia hubs that host a jillion controllers, have a jillion buttons, host online play and can push trillions of ray-traced polygons in high def at 60fps. The qualitiative differences between these two is going to be negligible - especially when both are running 2nd generation software.

So all things being equal, and I believe them to be, the winner will be the console that snowballs the biggest user base. At this point, September is an eternity for Sony.

Nintendo is the dark horse here. I'm hoping they'll come out of the box with something so different and interesting that it gets guys like me back into gaming. I just don't see it happening though. Right now the money is in loud, multiplayer, online-capable games where you blow stuff up and/or throw footballs. The PS3 and Xbox will fill that bill, and the Nintendo will languish in 3rd despite having some facinating software.

Re: Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2006: PS3 screens (WOW!)

Let's say that PS3 will come out like Sony is saying around November/December this year. I seriously doubt if there will be enough consoles at first to cover the world market and more than a handful of games so that will put Sony at least one year behind MS and with top titles like Gears of War and Halo 3 on the shelves things will be even more difficult for them.

Also i 'm not convinced that PS3 will be superior to 360 in graphics. Check this comparison:
