NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Japanese electronics giant Sony may cut the price of its PlayStation 3 by $100 worldwide in October, according to an analyst with Goldman Sachs.

The PS3, criticized by consumers and industry watchers for its high price, can cost up to $700, although the basic model retails for $499.
"The PS3 price has long been cited as high," Fujimori wrote, noting that cutting the price of game consoles has historically quadrupled volumes.

The PS3 prototype had 4,000 components but now a shift to around 2,000 is in the pipeline.
Earlier in March, press reports in Japan said Sony is planning to introduce cheaper microprocessor chips for its PS3 to help bring down the price.

I was at the local Target last weekend and had a minute to play what I presume was Gran Turismo on the PS3. I was impressed. Finally after what seems like years upon years, there's a console that's capable of delivering high resoluton, 60fps, 3D graphics capable of rivaling the stuff Sega had running in video arcades 10 years ago.

I remember when "Daytona USA 2" came out in the arcades around 96 or 97. I was thinking "In five years I'll have gear like this at home!" How wrong I was.

I think PS3 could have a good Chirstmas season if the price drop is significant enough. I wouldn't mind getting one if they could manage to get the price under $400.

Xbox 360 will soon lower it's price too, and Nintendo can lower whenever they damn please, since they are already making money off the console....(but they won't since they demand is still higher than what they can handle)

And Osna, i hope you were kidding with Daytona USA.... Dreamcast can probably handle that one without difficulties.... GT HD is miles above this (although GT HD is nothing more than GT 4 in HD. GT 5 will truly be beautiful!
