E55 owners and their E63 impressions

from mbworld.org

1.
Was at dealer yesterday checking out the CLK63 cab. Looked at it but it did not illicit any interest in me. However in front of the car was a new E63. Went for a test drive with my salesman.

Engine sounds a little more guttural. Low end torque no comparison to E55. E55 kicks you in the back as you step on it while this one pulls away much tamer. Acceleration seems to be more linear or even a little quciker as speed picks up. Should be as fast if not faster from 30mph to 70mph than a stock E55. However, engine seems reluctant to rev and revs quite slow. When it does get to higher rpm (5500 and up) it feels and sounds rough while the E55 engine feels quite smooth all the way.

Chasis feels very similar to my E55. Steering wheel is new and nicer then the stock E55 one. However, manual shifts are very slow. I was expecting much better shifts.

Overall, I think I made the right decision a few months ago getting my E55. I like the low end torque, smoother engine, and ability to modify it with pulleys and ECU upgrades.

I drove the E63 today and really like some of the subtle refinements to the interior. However, I think the redesigned front end looks a little Hyundai-ish, does anyone else agree? The fit a finish are top rate and the shift paddles are a nice improvement over the shift buttons on the 55. The car drove great and went like hell but it seems to be lacking the devastating torque of the E55. The breaks and transmission seem to be an improvement over the E55. I was expecting to be blown away by the acceleration but it lacks the violence of the 55’s. The valve covers and air intake have a weird gray plastic coating on them, can anyone explain this feature? It makes the engine bay look super cheesy but I suspect that it provides some sort of insulation and/or cooling benefits. I’d be interested to see a head to head comparison between the 55 and 63. Can't wait for the twin turbo version.

Hey guys, so our local dealer here just got a black on black E63 in. First of all, i really do not like the pointed front end, and why did they take the writing off the star base and put another emblem on the top of the grill, that is hideous. Other than that i love the new tail light look, and the wheels are amazing. Our salesman got the keys to it and we took it for a ride. To make a long story short, had my brother follow in my 04 E55. I was leading, and took the car on some back roads. We come to a 4 way stop sign and no one is around. We roll through the stop sign, i put my hand out the window and counted down using my fingers from 3 (not the best method to be fair). I punched it and got the jump, but my brother was stuck on my ass up to about 70. I stopped in a parking lot and he said he was not at WOT, but close. I can't say i was shocked by the result. All in all though, its a great car, but i dont think i will be able to justify paying almost 35k for this car. Just thought i would share my experience.

The power delivery is much smoother throughout the powerband, its at its weak point down low. It starts to pull pretty hard from mid-high rpms, you can really tell its a NA engine. As for steering I would say it is slightly tighter, but i also think the AIRMATIC has been upgraded, in sports 2 I felt less body roll. As for the pin you in the back of your seat feeling, no doubt the E55 is the victor. As others have said i think the 55 is faster out of the hole, and probably to about 110, from there i think the 63 will begin to pull (much like the new M5). The sound is different than the 55, but not by much, i would say that the 55 is louder down low in the rpms.
