What was really wrong with my car

My previous thread concerned the intense gasoline smell both outside and inside the car after filling-up. It is an '07 E350 Sport, just 14mos. old. The car was flatbedded in and fixed for one of two defective fuel tank seals. Both the right and left seals were replaced as a "courtesy".

The car was returned a second and then a third time to the dealer for recurrent problem. The second time was obviously again NOT the fix.

With the third visit to the Mercedes dealer in two weeks, they discovered with a "new" device which demonstrates vapor leaks, that the problem was a hole in the left center fuel tank. I would be concerned of a fire should the car be rear ended or such things as being hit by a discarded cigarette butt.

After a Monday to late Friday service period, the car was returned freshly detailed inside and out with complete removal of the gasoline odor, plus a full tank of gas.

The dealer maintains that this problem is not uncommon in Mercedes, especially E Class, and that "several" of them have come in with the same complaint. They also intimated that it was a problem with late model BMW's, something that my BMW dealer bristled at.

I hope that the problem is solved and am glad this is a leased vehicle.

Dam, you are one unlucky E-class owner. The cars from all E-class driving forum members here has been almost problem free so far. I really don't think this is a common problem in an E-class, your dealer is probably talking BS.

I hope you won't get rid of your car soon, because the E-class is a wonderful car, and I hope nothing else will go wrong in the future.

Btw please share photos of your car in herehttp://www.germancarzone.com/my-car-...ry-thread.html
