How to get launch in the E63 .....

Well , as you all know , when it comes to owning a car and stuff , u try to learn how it works , and how to get the best out of the car , especially when its a performance car ..... In this case , ive learned alot about my car (the E63) , now the truth is , it does not have all that available torque at low revs as you all know , no matter if u have the ESP switched off or on the car will not skid at take off , so just about a week ago , i was driving it during a period i like to call (enjoy my ride) lol , thats late at night . I thought since the mass torque is located far off the start which is at arround 4500 rpm , maybe I could get some more rev off the take off and get a good 350- 390 ft/lbs of torque , something similar to the launch control in the M5 , so I used my left foot to hold the breaks , and I hit the gas peddle till I reached 2500 rpm , switched off the ESP , and setup the gearing to manual mode , then I let go of the breaks and peddled to the meddle , the car took off with great throttle and managed to hold that revv , with a loud reaction from the exhaust and engine , the rubber did peel out a little bit , but not to the extent where it might affect timing , I think i did about 4 seconds flat .....

I called my cousin whom had traded his E55 for a white E63 , to test the differences , i told him to accelerate like normal , so we went at it , the difference off the start to 60 mph was a somewhat 1 car and a half difference .....

I guess what im trying to say is i can manage to feel the rush of the E55 now , and skip that lag off the start .. So I called it my own launch control , and its not complicated at all ... Just a piece of info i liked to share with you guys ...

Most appreciated.

The next time I get a chance to drive an E-Class AMG, I'll keep this in mind (which won't happen anytime soon!).

Its actually just another example of how this 63 is so sport orriented in comparison to the 55 , and it shows how blind folded journalists are when it comes to testing AMGs , because they are so used to AMGs being so simple and easy to use ...

Anyway , cant blame them , this thing didnt work on the E55 or CLS55 i had , because they are too massive on torque , i couldnt even accelerate with the ESP off ...lol

Can you access the engineering mode and switch off ESP completely? I am interested to know if this make a difference between this and switching off the ESP on the dash.

On the 63 AMGs , the ESP does switch off completely ... But if you are talking about the light on the dash , well if u have ESP off , that has to show on the dash ...

Re: How to get launch in the E63 .....

Alil, what you describe is actually a well known technique in launching cars with automatic transmissions. Commonly called "brake torquing". Essentially it is similar to lauching with a manual transmission when you deliberately rev the car to high rpm's before dropping the clutch so that the car launches off in the meat of the powerband.

With an automatic transmission, you are loading the torque converter when you press the accelerator and brake simulataneously. Don't hold the revs too long before letting go of the brake, as it may cause premature failure of the torque converter.

In fact, some of the published car tests (like Car & Driver) routinely experiment with this technique on cars with automatic transmissions. Some cars perform better, while the gain is not so great on others. What they publish is the BEST time they could achieve, which may or may not be with this "brake torquing" technique.

Very well said man , you r right , it does not work on some cars like the E55 , with this car though , it suits it well ....

Re: How to get launch in the E63 .....

Sounds good! Maybe you can buy an AX22 or Performance Box and start timing your pulls. Would be interesting to find out the results.
