Re: Fine Art

Bruce Nauman is widely regarded as the most significant living artist in the [western art] world today.

'Dog Biting It's Ass', 1989

'Having Fun -Good Life', 1985

Here are some interesting photographs. Photography has increasingly been accepted as high art over the past few years ...some top photographs now command tens of thousands of dollars at auction or dealer galleries.

LIU HEUNG SHING 'Three Youths in Siamo, Yunnan', 1981

ANDREAS GURSKY 'Genoa', 1991

THOMAS STRUTH 'Bernhardstrasse 2, Leipzig', 1991

PHILIP-LORCA DICORCIA 'Tokyo', 1998

Re: Fine Art

Kerzner International, one of the gaming industry's strongest players, is having Frank Gehry as their trump card in their bid for setting up the Singapore Integrated Resort in Marina Bay. Other contestants for building this mega-casino *** resort includes Genting International and Eighth Wonder.

Here's a picture of Gehry's design which may appear artistic to many, but to the average Singaporean, it just looks plain ugly and the people here in general, have a problem accepting such a structure up instead of a traditional resort-like building. What do you guys think?

Sorry I don't have a better picture, the details for the these resorts are highly confidential.

I think I wouldn't mind such a structure... But the architectural landscape in Singapore is not yet matured to take such a controversial design, IMO.

Re: Fine Art

Gehry is definately one of the most notable architects of our time ...and his buildings are interesting ...but I do not rate him as highly as some other architects. Lord Norman Foster, Oscar Niemeyer, Jean Nouvel, Herzog & De Meuron, Arata Isozaki, Richard Meier, Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Renzo Piano ....and Ettore Sottsass are architects I really love.

Austrian-born Italian Ettore Sottsass is probably my favourite. I have loved his designs since I was in high school. I own several pieces of furniture by Sottsass, I have posted pictures of his work before. I am a huge fan of his -- BTW, he is 89 years old.

Sottsass is a designer's designer. His style is block-like and simple ...but never simplistic. I find great pleasure in his use of bold colour and shapes. He will undoubtedly be regarded as one of the most important designers in history. Every major museum in the world has Sottsass objects in its collection.

Ettore Sottsass.
