You should try running ubuntu with beryl. You can get 4 workspaces going at one time. I never use more than 2, but its a nice feature.

btw, i hit the "thank" button by accident when i was going for the "quote" button. in case your wondering why i thanked you. although your advice of a santa rosa mac pro does sound pretty good.

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

From my personal experience HP laptops are the way to go. The laptop I am using to type this message on is one, has it for about 2 and a half years, and nothing has gone wrong with it. Also my sister got a new HP Pavilion laptop for Christmas and that's still going strong. My father also used to have one for work!

The only problem with HP laptops for you are they do HD DVD, not blue ray!

Word!! Once you get a 17 incher there is no turning back. I was planning on buying a 14 incher but when I got my eyes on the 17 inch I couldn't resist the glory before my eyes. Further more the 17 incher had better specs than the smaller versions, gotta love the dual hard drives giving me a total of 160GB.
Here are pictures of my baby from a review I wrote a few months ago:

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

Thanks guys for your feedback.

1) i want a 17' screen, because at work i have a Neovo 19' monitor which is very helpfull since i use mostly designing programs, but at home i have a 15' Sony screen, which is better than the Neovo, but hell small and it's getting on my nerves. So the laptop has to be bigger than 15' so 17 is my choise!

2) Biggest mobility is not my problem. I only want to be able to take the laptop with me at work every now and then, and take with me in bed or in living room

3) It has to be top-notch and top-quality since i have much high expectations from it and i want it to last for long enough. I have my current desktop computer since 2001 or 2002 and will keep it for at least two years more, and i am not planning to change the laptop soon enough.

4) I also play games, and have thousants of mp3 and movies so a huge HD is a must!

5) Gene: Santa Rosa Platform? I am not very deep into computers, so i don't understand much. I want/need the laptop in June, no matter if the new platform is availiable here!

6) NarutoRamen: It will cost me around 2.800eur and another 200eur for some small updates for my current desktop, such as a new HD, USB 2.0 ports and 2Mbps Wireless modem/ADSL

7) Luwalira: As said before, i will take it to work every now and then. So the weight is not my first criteria!

8) It's gonna be Sony. No question about it. I don't know why, but i am stuck with sony when it comes to laptops

------
Oh, and something else guys. I want to build a wireless network in the house. Which means i want to connect three computers (my desktop, my laptop, gf's laptop) via LAN, with a wireless modem/router/whatever is called. AND I want to connect the PC with the TV and stereo system. Is that possible? I think that i found something that makes it possible. Any suggestions?

PS: Do you have any specific Laptop model to offer, that is equilevant to the Vaio i'm thinking of?

Thanks again boys! I really appreciate this!

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

all i can say is good luck with this and that computer sounds great.
When i was in the market this summer it was between the macbook that i have now and a sony. Sony's have great screens it reminds me of the screen on my mac very bright. Once you get the wireless that is the easiest thing to set up believe me. I am not sure though on how to connect tv and everything wirelessly but if someone here knows how i would be interested since i have a big ol LCD tv so that could be intersting

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

Giannis...everything you listed is possible...albiet a bit pricey. But since you're basically doing a computer-overhaul might as well.

Right now in my house I have 1 desktop, 3 laptops, ps3, psp and xbox360(rip) connected to the internet using wifi.

With my X-box I was able to stream videos and music to my tv, which was awesome!!!

Either way...if you need help setting up your network, I'll be more than happy to help.

BTW...I have a 1.5 year old HP 17" Laptop. But I think I'm going to wait about a year before I upgrade to a new one.

If you are looking for a top end laptop then you have found the right one. Connecting the PC to the TV and stereo system isn't difficult. All you need is a DVI/HDMI(depending on your connectivity) cable and a 3.5mm to RCA cable or a SPDIF cable to get that 5.1 sound out of your computer.

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

lol NarutoRamen
Actually i have pretty everything connected to each other via cables:
TV-DVD -->stereo
PC -->stereo

And i found a way to connect the pc to the stereo and TV wirelessly. All i need is 70 eur. I asked a friend with a computer shop how the whole package is gonna cost. New laptop, wireless LAN with firewal, wireless connection for PC/TV/Stereo and a new Broadband modem/router and connection! I am expecting to hear from him sometime this week. Probably tomorrow morning!

I know one thing! This is gonna be awesome!
