Thats the same market I am in right now I am currently looking into the Pentax K100D because for the price it's one hell of a camera. But I am sure there are some others on this board who could give a bit more experienced input.

Well, for an entry level DSLR you have several.

Depending on your budget.

Nikon

D50 (6 megapixels may be replaced soon)$599 US
D80 (10 megapixel. brand new just came out) $999 US

Canon

350D (old. 8 megapixel. was replaced by 400D. still available) Price: I am not sure.
400D (brand new. 10 megapixel) about $800 US

Sony

A100 (not to much of an entry level, but not a bad price

Pentax

8GB Sandisk Ultra..so i can shoot in RAW

Here are two nice point&shoot cameras in your price range

Canon PowerShot SD700 IS- $300 US dollars probablly about 235Eu

Nikon Coolpix S7c- about same price
