Süddeutsche Zeitung Drives the Mercedes C220 CDI "Elegance"

The Süddeutsche Zeitung took a well-equipped C220 CDI for a spin. They drove the car from Munich, over the Alps, towards Northern Italy.

On the long drive south they praised the suspension numerous times citing the fact that it does an excellent job of keeping the car comfortable at all times, better than Audi and BMW. Despite the high comfort levels the Elegance C-Class also handles well according to the reviewer and offers a high level of driving fun.

The 5-speed automatic works smoothly in the background. The trip south incorporated two adults and their luggage. The C220 CDI, which has a very quiet engine according to the reviewer, delivered an acceptable 7.5 L diesel / 100 km (31.3 mpg), which is perfectly acceptable given that the car was driven at higher speeds on highways.

The C220 CDI and C-Class in general make an excellent long-distance cruiser. Interior space is a bit limited if you're traveling with more than two people though.

The cost of the testcar was a staggering 54,403 Euros!

You can get an E-Class Avantgarde (E 280 CDI as an example) for that price!!

I would never buy a C-Class!!

Staggering isn't the word for it. My US MODEL C300 Luxury/Elegance (to be built this week) with metallic, P2, Multimedia, leather (automatic standard equipment) will cost $40860 which looks to me like 30328 Euros. No 18" wheels because they are not available on this model.
