as an overall concept it is a winner in the great and long traditions of "some people love it, most like it, and only a few hardcore antibrand people would hate it" the same tradition that brought us the E39 amongst others

even the headlights are an extension of the design, they continue the curve that starts before them,

furthermore, the "groundbreaking design cues" like the rear are ripofs of the maybach, the rear is essentially a maybach without the lower light strip "plus" the metal inserts to give it more character

its big, damn big, but it doesn't strik, and size doesn't always matters

there are no really orginal curves, or groundbreaking design elements, it works, but doesn't strike

and concerning the 4 door coupe thingamajigg, i have come to a conclusion that i would consider a car being a 4 door coupe if you can erase the rear door lines and the handle and the design wouldn't look off

something true of the aston rapide concept, and the mazda RX8, something untrue of the CLS

damn engineering school is useful
What kind of engineering school do you go to? Anyway, Vabboud has pointed out everything clearly so I don't have much to add. That rule about the 4 door coupe is a good one that I'll use from now on.

Honestly speaking... the 7er did bring something new to the table while the S doesn't.

Re: 7er really has a nice butt... 7er pic thread..

IMO the 7 is a much more beautiful car !!!
The new S just isn't pretty enough . I liked the w220 much better !

In terms of design - I'll take the 7 (much more interesting to look at ) , then the Audi A8 (elegant design , but a bit boring compared to the 7 ) while the S just doen't have the wow factor

here are some beutiful 7er pics (HIGH RES !!!) :

Thanks for turning this into the "7 Series VS. S-Class Thread" (instead of "7er pic thread" as the title states) Robert .

I personally have no problem with the 7er or its design, but I love the S-Klasse (call me a fan boy if you want ). What were your thoughts of the E66 when it was introduced? I'm sure you didn't like it as much as you do now. You’ll probably like the W221 in the future.

Now, how about more pictures of the face-lifted 7

Re: 7er really has a nice butt... 7er pic thread..

sometimes less is more....And I dont think the the S class designers had that in mind.

Yes they have curves, but at some point, you have to say enough is enough and mercedes said enough is inadequete. You have to remember that big saloons such as these have to be conservative automobiles that nedd to have a nicely styled body with a powerfull stance. The benz is styled like an RX8 and it has a very weak stance. Frankly they missed the mark. Its too "look at me" and not just a good looking substantial car. When I think of a 7 I think of at as being substantial and something I'd be proud to own, I can make sence of the lines and the shapes because they flow and arent too flamboyant. The S is like the frankenstein of luxury vehicles. It looks as though they used the maybach as the rear, the CLS as the window line, and the RX8 as its front wheel arches.

I think that all of you Benz fans (I hate segregating group like that but oh well) have taken that whole Coupe thing way too far. Because the CLS came out and Benz called it a 4door coupe (even though it had 4 real size doors), now everything that Benz makes looks like a Coupe. The S-class is so far from a Coupe... actually, all the cars in this segment resembles nothing like a Coupe.

Let's face it... you want to play the IMO game all day if you want to... the 7er moved the Earth from its orbit. In the design department alone, that car shifted everything for BMW and influenced many car makers around the world. Even the Benz designers decided to use the 7er's interior. That's a HUGE sign if you ask me. Benz copying BMW? Did they think that no one would notice the similarities? Sure, say that sales don't matter... say it's ugly... say it looks like a rhino. But your beloved company obviously thought it was good enough that it was worth copying.

So I'm totally with Roberto... in 60 years time you will look back and I will ask you which one of these cars made a bigger impact. The 7er is only half way in it's life cycle and I guarantee you that it will be in fact a classic.
Excellent post, karma for you!

This is like when you are happy, everyone ignores, when you are feeling sad, nobody cares but wait till make a fart! What car makers did it influence?

Indeed it's well ahead of it's time. People consider it ugly already now.
