Re: 7er really has a nice butt... 7er pic thread..

The way some of you are describing this vehicle, one would expect it to be some kind of motorized freak-show.

This is a beautiful car, designed by visionary designers who, whether you like it or not, have also greatly inspired the designers of the S class. The difference is, this car caused a frenzy when it was launched, the Mercedes just put us to sleep - Mercedes-Benz's management don't have the courage to be as radical as BMW.

Say what you like about it, the fact is this is THE luxury saloon of the moment.

Re: 7er really has a nice butt... 7er pic thread..

I am glad that you picked this picture because it says it all:

A car of the size of the S and 7er should have presence and I think that the S fails at that. Compared to the 7er from the same post, I CAN tell that the 7er is more dynamic.

I think that all of you Benz fans (I hate segregating group like that but oh well) have taken that whole Coupe thing way too far. Because the CLS came out and Benz called it a 4door coupe (even though it had 4 real size doors), now everything that Benz makes looks like a Coupe. The S-class is so far from a Coupe... actually, all the cars in this segment resembles nothing like a Coupe.

Let's face it... you want to play the IMO game all day if you want to... the 7er moved the Earth from its orbit. In the design department alone, that car shifted everything for BMW and influenced many car makers around the world. Even the Benz designers decided to use the 7er's interior. That's a HUGE sign if you ask me. Benz copying BMW? Did they think that no one would notice the similarities? Sure, say that sales don't matter... say it's ugly... say it looks like a rhino. But your beloved company obviously thought it was good enough that it was worth copying.

So I'm totally with Roberto... in 60 years time you will look back and I will ask you which one of these cars made a bigger impact. The 7er is only half way in it's life cycle and I guarantee you that it will be in fact a classic.

Re: 7er really has a nice butt... 7er pic thread..

Im gonna tell you why it stirred things up.. beacuse its ugly.. thats why..
Everybody can make a ugly car that stunns the hell out of ppl...
this is the W221 the old one was W220 this one is pretty similar to the old in someways.. i belive that the next S will be a car that will be totally diffrent.. like the case was with W140 to W220...
So i agree that the 7er ment more for BMW cause it was the start of something new at BMW..but who really cares?? i dont care.. that doesent make it better..
that doesent make me wanna buy it.. its just a crappy point..

That's definitely not a fact, that's an opinion. Most of what we write on this forum is about opinion. We all have different taste and it is impossible for any one person to have a per definition 'better' taste than any other person, at least when it comes to simple matters of aesthetics. After all, taste is all about personal preference. We can disagree about matters of taste, discuss or even argue about them, but we cannot disagree on the right of the other person to express his opinion even if it differs from ours. We can only hope this is done in "good taste".

I feel you guys are taking this whole thing way too seriously. The Artist thinks the 7er looks like a rhino - so what? I think the S-class is the one that looks more like a rhino, but that doesn't mean I have to disrespect The Artist's opinion or question his taste. And besides, isn't the rhino an organic design? (Of course, this works the other way, too - there was definitely no need to tell anyone to take their heads out of their posteriors for instance.)

Re: 7er really has a nice butt... 7er pic thread..

let me clarify a bit the concpet of lines and organics

when i look at the S i see a given set of lines that create a given form

i can basically define every single line, circle, curve in terms of equations of the first, second asnd third degree, (cruely speaking), what i see is a set of lines that define the overall profile, 2 eccentric circles for teh wheel arches, and a portion of a third degree curve with the rear door design

as an overall concept it is a winner in the great and long traditions of "some people love it, most like it, and only a few hardcore antibrand people would hate it" the same tradition that brought us the E39 amongst others

even the headlights are an extension of the design, they continue the curve that starts before them,

furthermore, the "groundbreaking design cues" like the rear are ripofs of the maybach, the rear is essentially a maybach without the lower light strip "plus" the metal inserts to give it more character

its big, damn big, but it doesn't strik, and size doesn't always matters

there are no really orginal curves, or groundbreaking design elements, it works, but doesn't strike

and concerning the 4 door coupe thingamajigg, i have come to a conclusion that i would consider a car being a 4 door coupe if you can erase the rear door lines and the handle and the design wouldn't look off

something true of the aston rapide concept, and the mazda RX8, something untrue of the CLS

damn engineering school is useful
