But I would like to know why you think the Merc is so much better than the BMW? What are you seeing that I'm not when you look at these pictures? - what am I missing? To me, the BMW has a much more striking appearance, it's sleeker and more elegant. ![]() ![]()

| Re: 7er really has a nice butt... 7er pic thread.. yeah man he said what i wanted to say.. the S class looks better cause its more elegant imo.. and at the same time it looks more sporty.. the rear light design is very clean.. the 7ers is to much .. to much light ( actually prefere the pre FL rear) the interior is by far better in the S imo.. especially in feel and quality.. And the front of the S is traditional MB elegant and superior.. and the 7er allthough much better than the pre FL it still feels like a compromise imo.. In fact the whole post FL 7er feels like a big compromise.. |

| Re: 7er really has a nice butt... 7er pic thread.. my take is that for the first time in history a merc is more geometric than its BMW counterpart, which is far more curvacious, organic and sexy and the S class barge has no hints of coupe or whatsoever you cannot miss a 7 in traffic, an S passes along, to me that defines a lot |

I truly believe the Merc fanboys are deceiving themselves with this new S class - they are seeing what they want the W221 to be - in reality it is, as vabboud put it, a big geometric barge with not a hint of a coupé - what are you guys taking? As far as the FL 7 being a compromise is concerned - well you slammed the pre FL model for being "ugly" and now you'll slam the FL model, calling it compromised - obviously it wouldn't matter what BMW do - it will never match your beloved S class. Well I have news for you, I was always a devoted Merc fan, but just like Deutsch, I too am very unhappy with Mercedes-Benz's cars of late - I don't see too many Audi or BMW fans looking enviously at Mercedes these days either - wake up to reality........the star has faded. Chris Bangle was treated like "human garbage" by some people when the E65/E66 was launched in 2001. But is has become the best selling 7er in the companies history...and you just can't argue with that. ![]() Last edited by SDNR; 01-18-2006 at 10:59 PM..

Listen very carefully especially from 6:00 on. Even the automotive designers who dislike current BMW styling admit BMW/Bangle's influence on contemporary automotive design have been very remarkable and undeniable. Last edited by EnI; 01-18-2006 at 11:01 PM..

| Re: 7er really has a nice butt... 7er pic thread.. Now that I've had time to absorb the FL 7 Series I'm content to say that the redesign was a misguided hack-job, and a blow to BMW's newfound avant garde credentials. Clearly, it was a matter of the brass capitulating under the weight extremly vocal bellyachers. Had they known that the 7er was on a path to strong sales we'd be looking at a very different Post-FL model today. The "fixed" rear lights shift the car's visual focus downwards, making the car appear bottom-heavy, and the front treatment, while attractive in and of itself, is devoid of the brash details that made the original E65 so distinctive. As for the S-Klasse, time will tell how this thing absorbs into our motoring envoronment. My personal feeling is that the car does a good job embodying Mercedes' take on modern luxury. The car has 'heavy' details like the pronounced wheel arches, but at the same time the beltline and greenhouse produce a very lithe image in our heads that runs counter to the 7er or the new Lexus LS. Still, I'm somewhat dissapointed that the new S doesn't have a distinctive hook that sets it far apart from its peers. Prior S'es have been design benchmarks, not just for the Mercedes brand, but for the automotive world in general. The new S seems more like a collection of pre-existing shapes and ideas assembled together with what's Benz's current design ethos. Against the facelifted 7er, I think the S-Klasse is the car of note. However, I'm still left wishing the S would knock my socks off, and I'm also wishing that the 7er was just left alone. |
