Chrysler PT Cruiser may cruise no more

After earlier reporting that Chrysler would be dropping only the convertible version of its retro-styled PT Cruiser, it seems now that the standard version too could be facing the axe as Chrysler execs seek to rejuvenate the brand to its former glory. Chrysler has already confirmed that the convertible was going, as well as the Pacifica, Crossfire, and the Dodge Magnum, and now latest reports claim the full PT Cruiser will likely be shown the door.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Chrysler will be dropping the PT Cruiser after the 2009 model year. Released in 2000 with retro looks and an affordable price the car immediately became an icon for many, allowing dealers to inflate their prices to suit the demand. Eight years later the car remains almost untouched, barring subtle styling changes made in 2006.

Despite this, it’s still on target to reach its 100,000 unit target for the year, making it the fifth most popular compact crossover sold in the U.S. However, this figure is apparently 27% below last year’s result and shows that all good things must eventually come to an end, even if it’s after 10 years.

The source also outlined a plan for Chrysler dealers to sell all passenger cars under the Chrysler name, while trucks would be reserved for the Dodge brand and SUVs for Jeep.

Re: Chrysler PT Cruiser may cruise no more

I'm surprised by this news. The PT was quite successful when it was first released into the North American market.

Re: Chrysler PT Cruiser may cruise no more

My family actually own a PT Cruiser, it's my father's, and it's not a bad little car. It could use more power and the turning radius is terrible, but it is very roomy inside and we haven't had any problems with it.

Those sale numbers are a little misleading because most of the PTs sold now are rental cars.
