I still can not believe they will not bring this to the US, but then again I guess the price and purpose of this car really do compete with the Q7. So it makes sense to offer the big SUV in the states and the smaller offroad wagon in Europe.

Over here, even though they offer(ed?) the allroad, and indeed the estate versions of the 5er and E-class no less, the SUVs are that much more popular - an equivalently engined/specified SUV, X5 or ML, would probably be around AUD$15k or some such less than the wagon version of the E/5er - actually, worse - the new ML500 is AUD$117k, the E500 Estate is AUD$164k; ML350 vs. E350 is $80k vs. $130k; X5 3.0i vs. 530i Touring is $84k vs. $118k.

There are tax differences for 4WDs and passenger cars here, but that alone doesn't account for the differences. You'd have to be hell bent on getting the estate to not be swayed by the disparity in the value equation in favour of the SUV.

For all that, I don't think that the positioning of the allroad would threaten the Q7 in the US. I reckon the story would be similar to the story over here.
