S4 MTM article by fourtitude...

Think I've found my new favorite car...

Quote:
Our European Editor David Corfield straps himself in to Kim Collins’ latest MTM transformation, an S4 Cabriolet where the S stands for something completely different…

As we approached the roundabout, I started to get nervous. Even with Kim Collins at the wheel surely we couldn’t get out of this one?

I needn’t have worried, even with the big numbers on the speedo, because this was no ordinary S4. Equipped with fabulous 370mm 6 pot MovIT brakes the stopping power was absolutely extraordinary, even when cold, as they are now…

Quote:
MovlT’s aluminium callipers are guaranteed to deploy the most extreme braking force and are designed for heavy street cars, not those wimpy lightweight racers you see on the track. The unsprung weight is reduced by using the highest grade aluminium alloy while a unique ventilation system with a surface nearly twice as big as a normal disc guarantees fade-free operation. That’s one of my nine lives saved then…

You’d be forgiven for thinking that with a car like the S4 Cabriolet there could be nothing whatsoever in need of a tweak or an upgrade, such is the overall completeness of the package. For some customers, though, S stands for Standard whereas in fact it should stand for Scary. Or in my case, sh*tless.

Quote:
This particular car belongs to a customer who, curiously, prefers to remain anonymous. The car does all the talking. Or rather, torquing. That’s because MTM has developed a rather natty line in superchargers for Audi’s normally-aspirated V8.

The addition of the kompressor ups the power of the S4 from a standard (and not altogether inconsiderable) 340bhp to an altogether more loutish 491 of the screaming stallions, producing 414 lb ft of torque in the process over the standard 302 lb ft. The difference is like comparing a Fiesta with a Ferrari, the spread of torque plotting an almost perfect upward diagonal right across the dyno graph.

Quote:
To aid the car’s road manners, this S4 features H&R lowered springs which drops the car by 25mm. The difference is incredible. Although the car feels more surefooted, there is minimal discomfort suffered by passengers, even in the back. Riding on MTM’s own design of 8.5J 19in rims and shod with 235/35 Continental SportContact tyres, the cabriolet grips the road and hangs on in there right around the bends. And the roundabouts…

Overall then, a superb result from Kim Collins. This is the first time qst has installed MTM’s supercharger upgrade to an S4 but I am sure it won’t be the last. The car is a fabulous machine, quicker and more discreet than a Ferrari F355 and with the sure-footedness of Audi’s superb quattro four-wheel drive system. What a belter!

I've always thought the B6's design looks far better than that of the B7(excluding the RS4). Anyone else think the same?

Personally, I feel the S4 cabrio to be the best mid-ranged convertible/ragtop out there. Nothing even comes close.

In stock form, I'm not that big a fan. In actuality I think I'd much rather have an E46 M3 cabrio. Doesn't get any more biased than that? Does it? LoL, o well, but really the M3 is a better car than the S4 IMO. Pardon the fact that it lacks as much versatility in both packaging and available configureations.

I'm an Audi guy and I'd probably take the M3 too, but I'd rather have neither. I'm not a fan of drop-tops in general especially when there is a superior hard roof version.

Not even close to me. The B6 looks soooo dated and "weekly designed" against the B7. I am reall turning my head eveytime a B7 comes, which I never did on the B6.
